The sexism displayed on Twitter following this announcement was palpable.

I hope the writers make this the best doctor. They have a LOT of new material to work with.

Don't know her range, but she has a talent for arching an eyebrow just right.

I'll give her a chance.

Surprised shes attractive, white & blond and not an mixed race woman in a wheelchair.

EDIT: having never watched a single episode, not even a 30 second commercial, so I dont get the allure... but some of the comments??? Over a TV show?

>> I really think that if it had been another white guy there would have been all out revolt. It had to be a woman or POC and I am here for it

>> I watched the clip and when she was revealed I felt the tears come down - they were tears of pure unbridled happiness that I didn’t expect but readily welcome as another glass ceiling is shattered. I am a 33-year-old male and I reacted this way and I cannot but imagine what this will mean to young women.
(really? casting a woman in a lead role is shattering a glass cleiling? has he never watched TV?)

Several more stating this will "empower women everywhere"

Are they going to be brave enough to reincarnate into a woman?

Ha! There's some buzz that the reveal being billed as after Wimbledon's 'Mens' Final' is a hint that the new Doctor will be a woman.

I love the interwebs. emoticon_love

As long as it's entertaining, I don't give a flip what gender the Doctor may be.

(really? casting a woman in a lead role is shattering a glass cleiling? has he never watched TV?)

Yes.

The history of the show has women frequently put into roles where all that they do is ask stupid leading questions to prompt exposition or they're helpless and scream a lot. (Not always the case. There have been some very good female "companions" on the show including a government-scientists and a (usually) gritty investigative reporter. But there have been more "downs" than "ups" in respect of women's representation in the show... Bonnie Langford representing the nadir. Sometimes it seemed that all the poor woman got to do was scream and whine.)

On top of that, the previous show-runners have made some very misogynist-statements.

So, this is progress.

So progress for this specific show.

But not for "lead women in TV series roles"....

So long as the writing is good - my wife and I found the Capaldi years slow and disappointing as he was a good actor with limited material to work with.

Well, in actuality, I think that we've already had a female Doctor. Donna Noble (my favorite companion by a long shot), in "The Two Doctors Become Three! - Journey's End" became a part human, part timelord clone of The Doctor.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Some may feel half a Doctor is better than none, I'd say you can't be just a little bit Doctor. big grin smiley

For forty years ago, Leela wasn't half bad as female characters go, and Who has actually done not all that bad taking the companions out of the damsel in distress box. And character wise, a fairly good argument could be made that River Song is every inch the Timelord as the Doctor.

But from another angle, I would agree that the character of the Doctor is sort of a James Bond of the science fiction world and women have suffered a run of 'Always the Moneypenny, never the Bond', or perhaps more apt, 'Always the Watson, never the Holmes'. So I can appreciate the enthusiasm behind the choice shown by many.

My strong-willed, independent, feminist wife feels that casting a woman as Doctor Who is "stupid. The character is a man. Next, they'll be casting James Bond as a woman."

Actually, the character is an alien.

If the Doctor can change appearance and personality and taste in clothes, I see nothing to prevent the Doctor from changing gender. I think Time Lords can technically become anything they like but this one obviously likes being a human.

Rowan was *fantastic*. That may hold the record for the fastest apparent show I've ever watched. I forget if it was even 15 minutes and Rowan was only in it for maybe 7? It seemed like no more than 15 seconds but boy did I love it. I converted my videotape to DVD with loving care and still have it.

The Curse of Fatal Death is one of my all-time favorites.

Oh, my wife has changed her tune, and now says the is glad her gender is represented in the form of the new Doctor.

As for me: In the face of change, I like a degree of consistency. I didn't like Jon Pertwee's gentlemanly Doctor being replaced with Tom Baker's schizotypal Doc, nor Tom Baker's schizotypal Doc being replaced with Peter Davison's cricketer. Add a gender twist in there, and it may extend the adjustment period. We'll have to see.

Edit: Wife has changed her mind again, and disapproves of the gender change. My desire to be accurate in my posts is starting to get irritating.
