They always come around August and I usually control them with borax and sugar. This time it's not working. They came Saturday and they're worse than ever now.

I just put some out, but I never had any luck out of it in the past.

Heard their hit the other day and thought, "why haven't I remembered these guys?"

Dennis,

You need a two-fold solution. One is the correct bait. They're looking for protein or carbs, not usually both simultaneously or so I've been told. And, you need an insecticide they've take back to the nest. That way, it will hopefully be a permanent solution rather than something you deal with annually.

I used one of their NY ant control kits to deal with ants in my parents house. It was a combination of gel and granular insecticides. The ants were decimated and haven't come back.

Fire ants are a little different than regular ants. For the most part, they don't come inside. They build mounds outside, and if you disturb the mound, they flow out by the hundreds/thousands and will sting the crap out of you.

Unfortunately, fire ants are a fact of life where I am. I have a container with one of the popular fire ant insecticides in it (probably Ortho), and whenever I find a nest, I just sprinkle some of the flakes around the mound. Within a day or two, the ants are gone. They supposedly bring the "food" back to the queen, and when she dies, the colony dies off. You have to kill the queen. Killing the worker ants will not accomplish anything (well, maybe some blood lust), and the queen will move to another site and start over.

These are fire ants coming inside, but the house is pretty porous. I found 5 or 6 mounds in the back yard not far from the house. I covered them with borax and sugar, which works 90% of the time. I think the carpenter ants are due in a week or two.

Dennis,

I disagree. The borax and sugar didn't work because they keep returning. Like I said... Use a solution that goes after the colony, just the few that get into the house.

Fire Ants = Ortho
Sugar/Carpenter/etc inside ants = Terro Ant Baits (just put one where the trail is, wait 24-48 hrs. Tape up the trap for any future infestation. Do NOT spray them, it just scatters the nest and you'll have multiple infestations.

Amdro is very effective against the little bastards.

If you put a button in front of me that would make fire ants extinct, I'd mash that sucker until the plastic cracked. And then I'd mash it a few more times.

I'm not an expert, but I have stayed at a hotel with a number in its name.

And, I have a lot of experience killing fire ants. FIRE ANTS. The nasty buzzards that came via New Orleans in bananas from Brazil or somewhere in South America. Buy, just buy Amdro fire ant bait. Follow simple directions, it will kill the queen. Like said, you MUST kill queen. Amdro does that. And, you will NEVER keep them from coming back! Different colonies will move right in, but, Amdro will control the filthy devils.

And, it's not expensive. I spend about $40 a year buying Amdro at WallyWorld fighting fire ants. My pest man also sprays around house when he comes, but at this place, I have a lot of land and keep them killed on my 600' of road side too. Yes friends, remember, to kill fire ants, get Amdro. That's all you need to know.

®This was brought to you by only an Amdro buyer, not a representative nor employer of Amdro nor any of its subsidiaries. And, Will understands.

Every summer, I get VERY tiny ants inside. I've had GREAT results with "Terro" liquid ant bait traps.

We've been having a fire ant crisis in Japan. They've had a big problem in China the past few years, now we're getting them in Japan coming in containers on ships. It's on the news almost every night, as they're spreading.

I read a story, maybe I was in junior high, that I still remember. I thought it was called "Jason and the fire ants" but I don't see that title in a search result (not that I tried all that hard). The bits and pieces that I recall would count as a mild nightmare.

We've had Fire Ants for decades in the pastures and crop fields but I've never heard of not one case of real fire ants coming into a house. I guess anything is possible. You can stick a stick in a fire ant mound and they can cover a 12" long stick within 10 seconds. Mounds can get over a foot high here depending on how much rain we've had, the more rain the higher they build.
