trader joe's highland single malt scotch is pretty good, esp. for the price

although most of the reviews online aren't so good, but they're mostly by whiskey snobs.

Damn those whiskey snobs!
I have enjoyed drinking more scotch than I should have with a previous girlfriend, and my impression is that the more expensive it is the more it tastes like fermented grass shavings. For me a glass of Famous Grouse is good enough.
I'm expecting a lot of angry posts from scotch aficionados…

Their blended whisky is great as a mixer, or straight if you aren't a snob. Same for their rum.

Unfortunately, here in Virginia, liquor sales are controlled by the state. So, if you wqant anything other than wine and beer you have to go to the Booze Nazis.

I tried rum when I was a college freshman. It was love at first sip!

I don't see myself ever going back to scotch.

....Costco also sell liquor like this also but hard to find.....scotch....tequila.....etc.

While I keep the basics around for guests, Havana Club Rum is my drink of choice - straight with two ice cubes.

At some point last night I realized that Wisconsin doesn't have silly liquor laws on the level that other places do. Otherwise I might have been familiar with this years ago.

Ditto here, no hard stuff at TJ's. When I grew up back in DE even beer and wine could only be sold in liquor stores. I was kind of shocked when I went away to college and you could buy mini bottles in the gas station.

My in-laws used to drink single malt scotch. They bought what is supposed to be the really good/expensive stuff. From what I tasted, it was vile. Yuck. I guess my taste buds like sweeter liquors, but man, it tasted awful, just awful.

"Single malt scotch" and "especially for for the price" are two things, when presented together will do anything but entice me. Single malt scotch is about having the best or not having it all. Other things are worth compromising, Single Malt is not one of them.

If Trader Joe's scotch does it for you and its all that works for your budget, then more power to you.

For me SMS is much more about the journey than the destination.

Do stop by the Trader Joe's on Monroe Street. They have a big display of their single malt for 16.99... but if you decide to play it safe, they also have Maker's Mark for 29.99.
