Too tired to figure this out myself - iPod Nano on old iMac?

If the iPod Nano charges on USB, would that mean a person with an iMac 350 mhz CRT version running Panther could use an iPod Nano? Or is there some other technical thing that I can't remember?

They can use it, but it will be slow data transfer speeds. USB 1.1 and all.

You could charge it, you could use it- but transfers will be painfully slow as the original iMac is USB 1.1, which runs at less than 10% than the Nano's USB 2.

Don't do it.

The experience will be troublesome, and future versions of iTunes may break under Panther (I'd consider that a real possibility, possibly as early as this spring).

Get them an iPod that you know will work with that machine, or none at all.

Sounds like it's time for a new Mac.

It is time for a new Mac. It belongs to a friend of mine, and I have had dreams of sneaking over there and breakiing it to force her to get a new one. She won't give it up.

You could accidentally install Linux on it...

The iPod nanos that my kids have work just fine on their iMac G3 400 DV's. The data transfer is slow, but, no problems at all. They do happen to be running 10.4 though.

My wife's 2gb Nano charges and syncs to a G3/500 iMac under 10.3.9 with no problems. Since she is not syncing lots of stuff it really doesn't seem to take very long. You should be fine using your iMac 350 until you get a new one.

Interesting info from you folks using older Macs. I might lie and tell her it can't ever work, however, in the hopes it may encourage her to get a newer Mac. ;)
