Despite repeated warnings, Lensrentals has had equipment returned with damage or destroyed from being used during the eclipse without solar filters.

Burned shutter

Sensor damage

and my favorite..

the 600 f4 - it looks fine on the outside

but don't look inside -

Overall, we were really impressed with how few pieces of gear we got back damaged. And of the things returned, we were equally impressed with our customer-base, and their guilt and owning up to the damage. Unfortunately, these types of damage are considered neglect, as warnings were given out to customers before the solar eclipse.

Eejiotts! I can understand iphone users, but photographers who rent equipment should know better.

Why does this happen? I can understand damage to sensors, but that first photo looks like a mechanical meltdown.

The lens focuses the light (IR/visible/UV) onto a very small spot. Same principle as when you use a magnifying glass to focus the sun's rays to ignite a piece of paper.

It is what it is.

I'm thinking back to when I was a kid playing with a magnifying glass and focusing the sun onto a spot in the street, and I could melt the asphalt. A lens focusing on the sun is probably similar.

Stuck with repair/replacement cost, and hopefully lost rental income as well.

I buy/rent digital high speed video cameras from the same guy as the Mythbusters got theirs, until he cut them off. They had a VERY cavalier attitude about protecting the rental gear from damage. They were forced to switch from Photron gear to Phantom, and ended up buying one or two of the cheap units for themselves. They are 5 or 6 figure cameras, and are built to order. You can't just make a call, and have a new one in a day.
