Has anyone ever used MoneyWiz for budgeting and personal finance?

Howdy folks. Long time no type. I'm trying to get back on the wagon with my finances after a few rocky years. I came across MoneyWiz https://wiz.money/ last week on one of those app bundle sites.. Setapp. That's the one. Has anyone ever used MoneyWiz? I searched the forum but the results I got were a few years old.

I've used several apps in the past and want to get back on the wagon. My situation is a bit more complicated though: I'm an expat and deal in multiple currencies with banks in the US and another country. I thought I'd try Quicken but even that doesn't let me deal with bank accounts of different currencies (At least the last time I checked anyway).

YNAB (You Need A Budget) doesn't do this either and this is a key reason why I'm not going to invest the mental energy into using YNAB right now even though I think the system could help me. The conversion rates really do affect how much USD amounts I have in my stores and just "pretending" the accounts are a different currency is way too confusing.

Any insights on MoneyWiz would be greatly appreciated! I think I'll play with it this coming weekend.

Welcome back to the hood. I'd say play around with Moneywiz. My freewheeling ways would only make you dizzy. Every time I attempt to get a handle on my finances It always ends with me eating a burrito.

trisho.,

Welcome back! Check out Moneydance. It's a more mature product than Moneywiz and might be able to handle your International accounts. Not a perfect app but a very solid choice.

Yes, back, good. I've had to do international currencies too, still working in two now. I had to use Account Edge. A bit expensive, but it does it. I was thinking the newest Quicken did too, but my version is old.

Thanks RobertM. I was thinking of Moneydance as well but I don't think they have the multiple bank accounts in different currencies option. I'll double check though.

I totally forgot about Account Edge. I just checked out Moneydance per RobertM's recommendation and it turns out they do support international bank accounts and even transactions between them!! Check out the support section:

RobertM, thanks so much for turning my attention back to Moneydance. Are you using it as well or something else? Also, I'm looking to see if it can do forecasting / future assigning of expenses into a budget. For instance, my health insurance is due quarterly. I'd like to budget for that in December so that I know that December will be a lean month, etc.

As usual, you can listen to Robert. Me? Eh, use a heaping cupful of salt! I've bought MoneyDance, don't know if my license is still good, but I'll check it out again. But I've used Account Edge since way back when it was MYOB. Probably overkill for what you need.

Mint.com and the Mint app are great for budgeting, I just don't know if it does the international money part you want. I've set it up for some clients, and been able to be very flexible in the budget.

trisho.,

I use Quicken 2007 for certain accounts and Moneydance for everything else. Moneydance is my primary personal finance app. AccountEdge and similar apps aren't personal finance apps. They're full-scale business accounting apps. Might be fine for personal use, though likely more complicated.

Not sure how important this is but Moneydance is cross-platform. That was one of my requirements since my wife is on a windows machine and I'm on a Mac. Although I handle finance stuff primarily, I wanted to make sure she always had ready access to the financial data and be able to do the entries and reports, too.

Mint (unlike Yodlee) doesn't support my main brokerage or my company's 401k or one of my stock DRIPs.

Will be dumping Mint for something like Moneywiz or Moneydance (either option must support ALL my online accounts - looks like anything that uses Yodlee will work)

Which of those is better in "automagically" assigning expenses/income to relevant categories, in everyone's experience?

I don't mind making manual changes, as long as the program can learn from the corrections I make.
I.e. I don't want to have to make the same manual corrections over and over again.

This is one of my big issues too. I used to say it was laziness but now that I understand myself better, I realize it's avoiding boredom and frustration to keep having to assign categories.

That said, over the past few days I've been reading more of the YNAB FAQ and I think I may give it a go after all. There is a work around for for dealing with my European accounts.
