Shut up Wesley... er... Seth. Somber Sci-Fi Dud Crashes,Burns

TVLine.

Um...

Despite what Fox’s official site claims, The Orville — premiering this Sunday at 8/7c — is not a “hilarious comedy.” It’s not even a comedy. Yes, there are a few Family Guy-esque punchlines scattered throughout, but as bafflingly as this sounds, The Orville is mostly a straightforward drama… and not a very good one, at that. Riddled with sci-fi clichés and paralyzed by a grim self-importance, MacFarlane’s shiny new vessel ends up being a colossal dud that not only fails to take flight, it short-circuits before it even gets out of the docking bay.

... woah.

I'll still give it a few episodes to see if they can right the ship (as it were).

The trailers look promising.

I find the term "hilarious" be extremely overused nowadays.

Somehow, it has supplanted 'amusing' or even 'funny.'

Seems as though the commercials are selling it as a sitcom. We'll see how long it lasts as an hour long episode with dramatic elements. If it arrives as a dud, the humor will probably get more crude in order to keep people watching.

Comedy is BY FAR the most popular genre - misidentifying something as comedy has been going on since the VHS days.

I'll give it a chance, because of six words:

Encounter at Farpoint
Code of Honor

Most reviewers seem to have enjoyed it.

Some thought it was more "Trek" than the new Star Trek.

There's one episode that seems to be rather off-putting. People who are easily offended are going to be very upset at it and I wouldn't be surprised if that was why this reviewer decided that he didn't like the show.

In retrospect, would many of you consider All In The Family a comedy?

I'm not so sure myself.

Well, three of his previous shows have done well, and FG spin off Cleveland, which was so-so. Having the 5th be iffy isn't really that big of a deal. And "A Million Ways to Die in the West" was a hilarious movie IMHO. I laugh each time I watch it.

The first season of TNG was a bit unsophisticated but then it got pretty good by season two.
