From what I understand Equifax is not currently able to tell us if our data was stolen or not. I've read a few articles and some recommend putting a fraud alert on our accounts, some recommend locking our credit, and some recommend using monitoring services. What are you choosing to do?

Recognizing that my identity has been stolen already (Chinese hack on the DOD), and hoping this event has a positive effect on the whole 'credit' industry.

I would demand that they destroy all of my data. You'd think I'd have a right to do that... but for some reason, I don't. I don't own this very private info - that's @#$%& up!

The networks of US Dept of Social Services, Anthem Blue Cross and Target have been hacked so we were offered free ID thief protection from each. Combined with the free ones from AAA and our credit unions our IDs our personal info have ironclad protection until the next breakin. We use credit karma to check our FICO from time to time.

This. I do a temporary thaw in which I turn the freeze off for a specific period of time and so it costs only the single $3 charge.

Nobody remembers their first download, but everyone remembers their 1st LP.

I have several relatives asking the same question, a few are considering LifeLock. Reviews of LifeLock are mixed, I'm wondering what you folks think about it.

My info didn't show as compromised so that's a bit of a relief. I have had a credit card stolen in the mail as well as getting caught up in the Target breach some years ago. In neither case was I responsible for the amounts.

If my info was compromised I would freeze my credit as it seems like the most logical approach. Of course I'd sign up with the Equifax ID program as well.

I look forward to Equifax top executives testifying in front of a congressional committee on this massive breach. Break out the tar and feathers cuz heads are gonna roll...

I froze my credit about a year and a half ago when I had a particular incident. I recently unlocked Equifax at the end of August to apply for something but that was only for about 10 days. Looks like it was open to the hack during that time, most likely. As far as I know, all three are still frozen. I'll double check this week.

Is locking your credit rating really going to do anything?

Equifax presumably had personal info, SSN's, etc. That's theoretically out in the wild now.

It seems like unscrupulous folks could do lots more damage than messing up my credit rating.
