Safari = unusable

Lately my Safari stinks. (v1.3.2) It takes forever to launch, pages take forever to load, and it crashes several times per session and whenever I quit Safari. Beachballs a plenty. Firefox is working beatifully. What's the deal?

Have you emptied the cache?

I gave up on the same version of Safari. I'm using OS 10.3.9 and found Safari to be really slow to load pages. It speeds up if I delete the preferences file but then slows down after a couple of uses. Never had that problem with Firefox so I've stuck with it.

I assume the Safari version used with Tiger is better but I haven't used it.

Version 2.0.4 (419.3) runs well here.

Trying trashing the file called Safari.plist.

Unlike Firefox there appears to be no way to limit the cache size or history file size in Safari so you have to clear them yourself from time to time. That speeds it up.

If you go to the apple forums you will see that you are not alone. I am also having problems and there is no magic solution although many suggestions such as the ones listed in this thread.

I run 1.3.2 as well and it has been pretty stable and if it does crash it is site specific.

Sometimes it's zippy as all get out but occasionally it will dog down but I have always
attributed it to what the site is loading behind the scene.

FWIW - It seems to me that simply emptying the cache doesn't always works, so if it seems
really doggy I will run Onyx or another utility that cleans the cache, as well as the
other housekeeping it does, and that seems to make it zippy again.

Delete your autofill history and your history in general.

For my problem I have deleted every single document on my computer AND done a safari reset. This fixes the problem for about 60 seconds and then it returns.

Maybe there's an issue with the site(s) you're going to?

So if you were on a brand new machine, and went to Apple.com, you'd still have the problems?

I have a new MacPro, a G5, and a MacBookPro which all do the exact same thing. Click and it starts to load but gets hung on something. Page never loads at all.

No firewall, no haxies (whatever that is), no pithhelmet.

Do you really think Safari would have 10% browser share if it actually behaved as you describe?

Hint: no.

Clue: problem is on your end.

Go to your users folder ---> Library ---> Safari ---> and throw away the Icons folder.

See if Safari performs better. I'm not sure if this still happens but a previous version of safari had an issue where the favicons got corrupted and throwing out this folder brought the speediness back.
