Passport required for some domestic flights
Posted by: Ombligo
Date: October 16, 2017 04:07PM
Starting next January 22, a passport will be required for any domestic flight originating in nine states - Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington

Unless those states update their state ID or driver's license requirements, those ID's will not meet the federal guidelines to board any flight. The guidelines were established 12 years ago in 2005, and 41 states have adapted to them.

So unless either those nine fall in line, or the feds change the requirements, come next January it is going to be very ugly at numerous airports.

I did not read the article, but based on your post, here is my comment.

this will affect residents of other 41 states that happen to catch a flight in these 9 states, and it would allow residents from these 9 states to board a plane in any of the other 41 states.

It would make more sense if they requested passport (or green card) for the residents of these 9 states, regardless of where the flight originates from.

A better headline would be "State Drivers License from some states not valid for Air Travel ID"

or "Not All States IDs valid for Air Travel"

I think you are exactly on point, s-t. The opening sentence of the linked article:

Come January 22, 2018, residents of nine states will need a passport to board any flight, domestic or international, according to new TSA guidelines.

In fact, I see nothing in that article to indicate "a passport will be required for any domestic flight originating in nine states." Pretty careless "reporting" on the OP's part, I would say.

And none of this is new. As a resident of Washington, I have known of this since at least 2016, and was reminded of this in March this year when I flew last.

Our State DOL is just being lazy. VERY, VERY lazy. Easy to comply. Redesign the ID, start issuing the new ones as people need renewals, or when they request a new one, for example by claiming it was "lost" or damaged beyond use. Pay the $15 and get a new one mailed to you.

They've had 12 years to get their $#!^ together... if they haven't figured it out yet, they should feel some pain.

Virginia will meet federal guidelines, I think some time this month. I just renewed my license in August. So that means before I can fly I'll have to get yet another driver's license. I let my passport expire so paying for yet another license is the cheapest and fastest route. Irritates me to no end. What a hassle for so many for no good reason.

Entirely careless article headline, article first sentence, and posting here.

If the current rules continue, the driver’s licenses of those states will not be sufficient ID for airline purposes by then. That’s the situation.

If you have a passport: you’ll be fine.
If you have a Global Entry or PreCheck ID: you’ll be fine.
If those states upgrade their licenses: you’ll be fine.
If another extension is granted to those states...as has already been done for Virginia: you’ll be fine. And “all non-compliant states are currently under review for possible extension.”

The latter is the most likely outcome.

Why extend? It just lets the states know that they don't need to take federal mandates seriously. Start firing people from the top down until someone steps up and says, "I can fix this for you" and they become the new boss.

The atomic bomb didn't take 12 years. The race to the Moon didnt' take 12 years.
If updating their DRIVERS LICENSE takes a state 12 years, then a bunch of p!ssed off travelers in those states need to have a little pow-wow on the capital steps of their states.

If it was 3 years, or 5 years, MAYBE even 8 years, I'd have sympathy.
It's been TWELVE YEARS.

No extension this time.

Jeebus! They just need a designer to fire up CS6 or whatever, and talk to their printing dept live while mocking up the new design. Then order up whatever card blanks they need, and print them out. Just copy other states and swap in your state's artwork along with their security protocols. Sheesh.

Sometimes when watching a show like "Designated Survivor" or reading Tom Clancy's "Debt of Honor" you can see some definite gains by a clean slate.

Had a DL from a REAL ID-compliant state, moved to WA 2 months ago, and therefore no longer have a compliant DL. Would be awesome if in 3 months I could still fly using my old ID but that would be far too easy.

Just to be fair to the OP, this story has been all over social media and ALL the publications/sites have titled it this way. Remember, these days headlines are written for clicks not clarity.

My state's legislature thought the Feds had no business dictating what our licenses should be like. After all, they are for driving. I have a passport.

Sorry I didn't get back earlier, I would have changed the subject line to something that wouldn't put folks in a wad.

When I renewed my license in Florida it was shortly after Florida started the Federal ID upgrades. They tell me I need a birth certificate and some other ID to renew my license. I complained and the staff was not 100% sure of what forms of ID were acceptable so in the end they just gave me my new license, good for 12 more years.
Another big joke

Nine states' State ID's appear to be circling the drain...

with regard to flight viability.

the constitution does not and could not take into account life in our times. some form of positive identification is now needed for safer air travel and driver’s licenses are more accessible and affordable than passports.

If it is a Federal mandate for "some form of positive identification" then let the Feds issue the appropriate document instead of forcing states to convert a single purpose document into a national one.
Like a passport card. It requires the same documentation as the "Secure ID", so why not provide one directly to meet your mandate?
Like Speedy I use the DL for driving, for the Feds, for the TSA i have a passport....

We have passport cards for my entire family now. Whenever MN gets around to having our DL suitable for air travel, we will switch back.

Not sure why this is a constitutional thing - if you want a passport card, get one.

There's no need to update the drivers license, unless it impacts the ability to drive. Everyone keeps trying to pin identification on various documents and numbers that they were never intended for. Same with Social Security. It was never intended to be an indelible personal identification number. The system was never designed for that. International travel, even interstate travel, is a federal issue. If the feds want that fixed, make a federal passenger ID card. Or mandate a passport as id for ALL flights for everyone and be done with it.
