....3rd gen Apple iPad....will declare obsolete later this month....

Apple to Classify Third-Generation iPad as Obsolete Later This Month

....Apple will add the third-generation iPad to its vintage and obsolete products list on October 31, 2017, according to an internal memo distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers and verified.

The memo states that both Wi-Fi and cellular models of the third-generation iPad will be classified as obsolete around the world, except in the state of California and Turkey due to legalities in those regions.

The distinction means that Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers will no longer repair or service the tablet since it will surpass five years since last being manufactured, except where required by law.

In California, for example, third-generation iPad owners may still obtain service from Apple Stores or by contacting Apple support at 1-800-APL-CARE. The extended coverage period will likely end in October 2019.

Apple released the third-generation iPad, formally known as "the new iPad," in March 2012. The tablet was Apple's last with a 30-pin dock connector, and it was immediately discontinued upon release of the fourth-generation iPad with a Lightning connector just seven months later.

The third-generation iPad will join the original iPad on the vintage and obsolete products list. iPad 2 hasn't received the classification since it remained in Apple's tablet lineup as a low-cost option until 2014.

and another one.......bites the dust...........?!

Was an intermediate product in the iPad lineup. Was big, ran hot and seemed slow even compared to the original iPad.

But it had super-fast Verizon LTE.

I still have mine. Got lots of music stuff on it that stopped working when iOS 8 came out. So mine is still on iOS 7.

I have an Air that used to belong to my son, but I may replace it with a mini 4 if they're cheap enough on BF.

Got mine for free as a gift from my employer. Still works fine, running 9.3.5. Thicker than the iPad2, but the retina screen is super nice.

Is this the first one with a Retina Screen?

If so this is the one i have.
It runs okay, but I'm starting see some problems with some webpages…

My wife had an iPad2 that we just retired last May. It was replaced with the current regular sized (non Pro) model.

that'd be me. dropped it and had the screen replaced once. worked for a time until someone in the house - either my son or the dog (neither will fess up) - did something to it to make the touch screen be unpredictable. still, if i leave it in a stand and talk to it sweetly it is my device for running netflix, hulu, and prime movies. and for that reason when it dies i will replace it.

In terms of rendering speed or just basic ability to render?

It is what it is.

Retina screen FTW and GPU is pretty good so games still play well on it. But the CPU was last year's tech when it debuted which does longevity no favors.

Mostly on one live blog that I go to during football games, it doesn't refresh automatically.
New comments between plays etc.
Works fine on my phone (too small of screen) works fine on my wife's new iPad and on the Mac Mini.
It is a minor complaint, but might indicate that other things also might not be compatible in the future…
