My 12 year old is preparing dinner

They have this "Life skills" class at school and one of the things they learn is to prepare SIMPLE meals. They also learn to do dishes, mop the floors, repair some basic clothing (attach buttons), etc.

Wish me luck.

I survived!

He even chopped some green onions with a very sharp knife and didn't cut himself.

Good for both of you. Especially if he was happy doing it.

I signed up for home economics in high school. Denied. Industrial arts for you, my boy. Mom taught me well, though.

...

he ASKED to do it. He was so proud of it. I guess after 12 years of feeding him, he feels it is time to return the favor once in a while smiling smiley

My 11 yr old bakes cakes, cookies, etc. He also helped me make fresh pastalast week. He's into baking, and does double boiling, etc to make creme anglaise, but he has a sweet tooth, so he hasn't got into savoury cooking all that much.

And a pony in the river turning blue...

Awesome that his school does this! IMO every school should offer life skills starting at an early grade - simple things at first - kids with parents who already require chores at home will ace it, but in any case, they will all be better ready to take care of themselves!
