Need some ideas for a small door into a crawlspace

Crawlspace access is on the side of the house. There is a hole about 24" x 24" (need to go measure to get more exact idea of size) cut into the brick veneer and cinderblock foundation. The current door is a simple wood frame with some sort of rough plywood. It is basically just friction fit into the opening. It has now warped badly out of square and needs to be replaced.

I could rebuild something similar. Friction-fit, shove it in there, done. Or, I could take a little more time and do something that will perhaps be a bit easier to use. Should I build a simple frame out of PT wood, sink some tap cons into the brick, and then build some sort of door to fit inside the frame? Or put some hinges on it? I need to be able to latch (maybe lock) it shut, more just so that kids can't easily get in. AC blower unit is in the crawlspace, but not much else is. So, it's kind of a once a year access kind of need, ideally. Although I have been in 3-4x this year for different things.

What approach would you folks recommend?

My mom has a similar crawl space access under her house. She has a basic frame with a hinged plywood door with a sliding bolt type latch. You could always use a hasp type latch so you could put a lock on it.

I'd frame it as you describe, build a regular thickness door to fit, use a couple standard hinges and a single cylinder deadbolt. I have this on a bbq pass-through from my lanai to my kitchen counter.

This:

or

You could probably replace the screwdriver latch with a locking one. The Amazon seller (Premier Access Doors) has some locking ones, but nothing in the size you mentioned -- at first glance...

Some big questions...
1- Is the space ventilated ? Should it be ?
2- How often will you access this space ? An insert with a tall sill will be a problem for your knees.
3- How weatherproof is the site ?

Those will guide you to your solutions.

1 - there are 3 small "vents" to the outside.
2 - see my initial message. normally about 1x a year for A/C service call. It's never going to be a super-easy spot to get into, but not as bad as some.
3 - the access is on the north side of the house. So, it will get rained on. Maybe 6 inches above ground level.
