Disposable plates and utensils for Thanksgiving dinner?
Posted by: 3d

For large parties and get-togethers like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays, etc. I prefer to use disposable plates and utensils for ease of cleanup at the end of the night. The fancy thick paper plates with designs smiling smiley

Red Solo cups for drinks. Sharpie marker to write your name on it.

At the end of the party I (as the kind wonderful host) literally bring out a garbage bag and clear the table before dessert and coffee. Coffee in styrofoam cups.

Does anyone else do this? Or is it weird?

We use disposable for Christmas. Who keeps a full dish set for 16 on hand, and wants to wash that many dishes after the meal on top of the many pots and pans?

When we got married we were gifted a table setting for 8. (8 dinner plates, 8 salad plates, 8 soup bowls, 8 cereal bowls, 8 mugs) So in a pinch we could serve 16, the salad plates are on the large side.

And we've accumulated a whole collection of Corelle plates as well. Silverware for 12. Wine glasses. Champagne flutes.

When we moved, we didn't even unpack half the stuff since we always used disposables for parties.

Try to get compostable items if you are buying new stuff.

We used to have an adults' table in the dining room and a kids' table in the back "sun" room and the kids would get the paper or plastic routine.

Now the house is child proofed but they still get in.
Ha!
Now we go to their house and raise hell.
and we get the paper plates.

And just where do you think all of that %$#$% goes after you put it in the garbage bag?

I prefer real stuff. It's not fancy and lots of it is mixed. Two reasons are paper stuff costs money, plus dogs and wild animals get into the trash when there is food leftovers in it.

IMHO If you supply the food and the venue and are cleaning up, you can use whatever utensils you darn well please.

If I were the recipient of this meal I would be grateful for good food I didn't have to cook or wash the pots and pans for.

We usually use the real stuff but we don't have a big family. This year it's all disposable as my Mom's dishwasher is kaput, to the point she had to turn hot water off at the sink. No biggie. And no racking our brains on what to get her for Christmas smiling smiley

No you're not weird. There are no "rules".

Good heavens, what would you consider an occasion for which the good china should be used?

The Good China and silverware gets broken out for holidays and birthdays. Over the years we've lost perhaps one of each piece.

HUGE gatherings involving finger foods and people circulating, and outdoors ? Definitely paper.

Good china?? We don't even have a dining table. We have a 4-seat table in the eat-in kitchen. We break out 2 long plastic folding tables from Costco for company. The tables serve double-duty for backyard BBQs in the summer. And cover the folding tables with plastic table cloths from the dollar store to class it up for the holidays grinning smiley

Most of the plastic will end up in the oceans or clogging rapidly dwindling landfill space so we don't use plastic disposables at our house. For parties with finger foods we use compostable paper plates and sometimes reusable plastic glasses. However, for a nice sit down dinner disposables are pretty tacky IMHO. How hard is it to put some dishes and utensils in the dishwasher?

Not everyone has plates and utensils for 35 people.

Where'd you get 35 from?

3d, I hate to think about all the waste you generate with your parties. Washing dishes is not that big a deal (says the guy who doesn't own a dishwasher).

If you have 35 people at a party it's a no-brainer and not expensive to rent glasses, dishes and silverware.

Absolutely NO to anything styrofoam or plastic. Paper plates are good. Coffee in REAL cups, preferably bone China.

Silver looking plastic ware and plastic "fancy" plates. No walking around with a trash bag, thats weird. People have legs. I do empty the trash can more than 3 times. Solo cups, no markers except for the kids.
