Convert .mac account

I have a friend with .mac, and I an trying to "convert" the account to email only on my account.
I have paid for and activated the additional email only account.
When I try to convert the account in set up--it seems that it is only available for expired, trial, and sub accounts only.

Do I have to wait til it expires?

No, I think you can/have to convert it to a subaccount, but the subaccount will only have email - is my guess. My suggestion would be to try to convert to a subaccount and see what happens.
