My wife's new Mac comes with Pages of course, but is there a better app for my aspiring author?
We're not planning to use Word.

Good question. Undetermined so far.
I envision the book as a longer term project, and an actual published paper book.
The smaller works probably mostly electronic. A few works may be printed booklets.

doesn't really matter, as long as she doesn't save the files in a super-obscure format that can't be read by anything else.

Word is at least ubiquitous at this point. Plain text files are good too. Pages is fine, but I'm not sure if there's anything else out there that can easily open them. Apple does have a history of abandoning software and making incompatible...

Clay,

Agreed on MS Word and text files. I do nearly all of my writing in a plain ol' text editor. Tex-Edit Plus. No special features. Just text. If I need to format my work, I'll import it into Word and go from there.

Some publishers want pretty specific formats done in Word. They must have workflows set up for getting rid of the crap that word introduc3s.

Ka,

You just reminded me of something very important. If I'm going to submit a work, I check with the recipient to find out what format is preferable and adapt my work to it accordingly.

Plain text makes sense to me - can be formatted easily once you know what format you need.

I second Scivener for writing books. It helps you in planning, plotting and keeping track of characters, locations and pliot lines. It's also helpful with non-fiction projects if that's what she has in mind.

I like Pages 09 for writing but the other options here will work if the author has written a fair bit.

If not, then you need to use whatever file format the editor liked. Pages exports into word just fine.
