Can anyone recommend some links that might point him into the right direction? I thought there might be something out there that's primarily geared to switchers.

I was talking with him at the Christmas day gathering, and he was unaware that the new Intel Macs could run all his software natively.

theres nothing to it, once you boot into Windows via bootcamp, you are running a windows peecee

really, theres nothing to get.

however, if he is just going to stay booted into windows all damn day, why bother with a mac? you will be missing the best part of it: OS X

I guess the 1st question is why is he switching? Does he plan on only using "PC" apps, or does he actually want to use Mac stuff. From there, we can go further...

I've been harping on him for years to go Mac. His biggest excuse was always that he would have to replace all his expensive apps.

When I told him that he could run those apps on the new Apple hardware, he seemed shocked. I suspect he is getting tired of all the problems that Windows users face day to day.

but he wont be leaving windows -- so he will have the same problems as before

what precious software does he need on the windows side? is he a power photoshop user? or would iPhoto be enough (iPhoto 7 will have even more to offer than 6)

jdc, he wants to go Mac. But he also wants to run the software he already has. Just like anyone else who is considering switching from a Windows enviroment.

He IS hooked on photoshop. Probably his #1 app. iPhoto might do the trick, but he'll have to make that call himself.

I think he wants to eventually migrate everything over to the Mac side eventually, he just doesn't want to abandon his 15+ years library of PC software in one stroke, like he would have if Apple were still using G4/G5 chips.

Do you have a semi-complete list of all the apps he uses on Windows right now?

Adobe offers platform cross-grades that won't set him back much money at all. $100 or $150 or something like that, last I looked. Many other software companies offer crossgrade paths for people switching platforms. Of course, Microsoft doesn't offer them.

Encourage him to get the mac. Download the Photoshop CS3 demo, which should last until the summer for free, and watch him shed his Windows skin.

I asked him earlier, and this was his reply:

"Ricko,
The main programs I am concerned about are:
Adobe CS2 (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator ect.
Adobe/ Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8, Flash 8 ect.
And most importantly, Flight Simulator X.
AutoCad 2000 would be nice but wouldn't break the deal."

The Adobe platform crossgrade option sounds like a winner. Flight Simulator X isn't available for the Mac side, so he will have to boot into XP for that.

vision63, he's about 99% close to switching. I'll have him get that PS CS3 demo.

I had no idea that Adobe did cross platform upgrades. I have some older Mac versions of PS. I would love to get PS for Windows for my work Dull craptop.
