Favorite christmas movie discussion!
Posted by: davemchine

Ok, we do this EVERY christmas but every once in awhile I think we discover a jem.

My favorites include:
The Bishop's Wife
Christmas in Connecticut
Elf
Holiday Inn
Scrolled
Mixed Nuts
National Lampoons
Stealing Christmas
Trading Places
Trapped in Paradise
White Christmas

Some that may be less known though:
Hog father
Christmas with a Capital C (religious)
O Henry's full House
Rare Exports
Shop Around the Corner
It Happened on 5th Avenue (My absolute best favorite)

I heard an interesting story recently about Jimmy Stewart's filming of It's a Wonderful Life. After filming the incredibly powerful scene where he breaks down in his home in front of his family the director wanted to shoot it one more time. Jimmy said no he couldn't do it again. Many think Jimmy drew from the horrors of his war experience to perform that scene. How amazing the things we must all go through.

Ok, Let's get more positive. Give me your favorite christmas movies so I can start bingeing!

It's a Wonderful Life has to be my all time favorite. Interesting story about the scene you described. I hadn't heard of that before.

I also like A Christmas Carol, the 1951 Alastair Sim version. I didn't know until recently that they changed the title for American distribution from the British version, which was called Scrooge.

Some other favorites, although much more recent, are Christmas with the Kranks, and Four Christmases. Some light hearted comedies to round out my holiday movie watching ritual.

Holiday movies (9 years ago) [forums.macresource.com]

Edit: Sorry, I skimmed and didn't read the part specifically looking for new gems.

Not really Winter Holiday and not that great but "Angry Angel" is recent.

Die Hard.

Gah. That's what my kids say too. Yippie-ay-yay.

For myself, I have some trouble getting through the George C Scott version of Christmas Carol without tearing up.

"It's a Wonderful Life" is my all-time favorite movie too. I just watched it two nights ago. "Snowglobe" (2007) and "Snow Globe Christmas" (2013) are two of my recent "Must Watch" additions to my holiday list.

Every holiday season, I also watch (in no particular order):
"A Christmas Carol" (LOTS of good versions to choose from)
"Miracle on 34th Street"
"A Christmas Story" (you'll shoot your eye out; 1983)
"Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol" ("God Bless Us, Everyone". 1962)

And many others.

Ho, Ho, Ho. Merry Chrismas to ALL forumites! angel smiley

Every time this topic comes up, I am amazed (and saddened) that more people don't mention "We're No Angels" with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray. It is simply a perfect movie:

You can rent it for $3.99 or buy it for $12.99 on Amazon Prime video, best money you'll ever spend.

for xmass movies, I like Miracle on 34th Street best. But its a wonderful like is a good movie. I love Trading Places.

I am not sure Die Hard is a christmas movie, but in the five thirtyeight ranking, they all seemed to agree that Bang Bang Kiss Kiss was a better movie that is sort about christmas (and that was a fun good movie that I just watched).

How can "Die Hard" NOT be a Christmas movie? Santa and machine guns! Now, if they splurged for red and green tracers, it would be a lock.

A Christmas Carol, with Alastair Sim from 1951.
It's just a really good movie.
Towards the end, when Scrooge wakes up and is dancing around, there is a brief shot of a stagehand reflected in a mirror.
Nothing's perfect.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

That's actually my favorite version of A Christmas Carol too. I used to like It's A Wonderful Life, but I can't sit through it anymore. But I can watch A Christmas Story over and over and over... drives my in-laws nuts every year when I turn their TV to TBS and watch it for hours.
