She was my College Spanish tutor.

Falle la clase, pero aprendi el lenguaje del amor. Sin arrepentimientos.

(I should mention that we were both seniors, except I was in college and she was in high school. We started dating in November, became engaged in January, and married in August. That was 33 years ago. Still haven't learned the language.)

The German word for contraceptive is “Schwangerschaftsverhütungsmittel”. By the time you finished saying that, it’s too late

We grew up in the same neighborhood..we were in different, teen age social groups who aligned at certain times and got along..she in the East Side Alley crowd..Me in the West side park crowd..We were friends and party mates on this basis for many years since we were about 16 or 17..got together while working at a local grocery store when we were in college... One night we went to go see the movie "Tootsy" as a friend night out after work....ended up making out in the car afterwards..lol..the rest is history and hot as hell.

I met my wife while I was in the 9th grade and she was in the 8th grade. We attended the same school and also the same church. After school we would often walk to the church youth house to visit with friends. She tells me I would then walk her home but I don't remember that.

Fast forward to my senior year of high school. My mother was not happy with the girls I was dating so she made me a list of girls she thought were appropriate for me. Of course I thought she was crazy. My wife was number two on that list.

I was working massive hours at the time so after work I would pick her up in my grimy smelly clothes late at night and we would drive to mcdonalds to have dinner together. I can't imagine what her parents thought. Then we attended the same college and we married at 21 and 22. People thought we were crazy to marry so young. I knew she was the one for me though and she still is 25 years later.

(Didn't marry, but just spoke to her yesterday when she called to wish me a Happy SteveG-mas).

Mexico. She was visiting her parents, who spent winters there to escape the weather in Kansas. I was on a sabbatical, sub-letting an apartment there for six weeks. A bunch of American ex-pats, mostly retired teachers, had a New Year's Eve party at their favorite restaurant, and we were the only people there under 70. I had to get back to the US, so we didn't get together until a few weeks later. She stayed another week. A few of the old ladies in the group conspired to get us hooked up, telling my to-be wife things like, "He said you were the most exciting woman he'd ever met" because of her adventurous travels, and that I was rich, neither of which was true. Later, the women told us they were a couple of crazy old ladies without enough to do.

That was 25 years ago and we're still together, so I guess it all worked.

At church - 54 years ago. She was 16 & I was 21. When we got married, her mother had to write a note giving the County Clerk permission to sell us a marriage license.

The other story is how we ended up at the same church. I had gone there all my life. Her dad was in the Air Force and they moved into town. Her mother started taking her and her little brother to a church down the street from their house. It turn out to have 'fire & brimstone' preaching that scared her little brother so he cried all through the service.

Her mother decided to change churches and move to the one I was attending. There we met.

We celebrated our 53 anniversary in November.

We met in high school.

OK, I guess I owe you folks some more details.

first two years of high school we were in different classes, so we didn't know each other. Then she moved in my class, but we were seated in opposite corners of the classroom, and I was in love with the girl sitting in front of me so I paid no attention to my future wife. I don't think I ever said more than Hello to her for the last two years of high school.

Then I came to USA, got marries to a girl I met in college. I went back to the 10 year high school reunion and she also came. I was married, she was seeing someone else, we had nothing to do with each other except small chat, like I did with a dozen of other girls. But we did exchange email addresses.

fast forward a couple of years later, my marriage in USA fell apart, her relationship in Romania fell apart, so one year before Christmas she wrote a short email. I replied, we started writing back and forth, and a couple of months later I invited her to visit me in USA. No response. A couple of days later I ask again, she said "I though you were joking, how can I even get a VISA?" I said "you go to Embassy and apply". She got the Tourist VISA, came over and we dated for a couple of weeks, took a trip to Yosemite, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, and when we came back we decided to continue to see each other. I went to Romania for Christmas, she came back for the Summer vacation, and we decided to get married. Been married since 2004 and we could not be happier. we have two wonderful kids, and things are getting better every day.

Met in a pub. There was a group of males and females that generally met up on Friday and Saturday nights. One evening my best friend and I were there early and were chatting about how we didn't have current girlfriends so decided that the first two unattached females in the group that arrived we would make a play for with the idea of something a bit more than pub friends. Doesn't sound very romantic and his relationship only lasted about 4 months but mine has been very happily trucking along for 47 wonderful years. 40th wedding anniversary next summer. He was my best man and later found a long term partner.

In a meditation class in San Francisco, at the break, I turned around to see who else was there.

When I looked at the middle of three women who were chatting on a back row, this thought popped into my head: "I wonder what it would be like to be married to her."

That night, these three friends needed a ride across the bridge back to Oakland, not far from where I lived.

And I've been happily finding out for 40 years.

In college, one of the two female students in the entire engineering school; we took the same advanced physics course.
Totally, totally opposite in our politics.
She hated my guts with a passion.
To the utter surprise of our friends we were married two years later....

A good friend of mine had a girlfriend that decided to play matchmaker. She was going to college and met a woman in class that was new in town and didn't know many people. The initial plan was to double date, but John got wrapped up in a three day poker game and didn't go. I ended up taking both women out that night, and started dating Eva on a regular basis. We were married within a year, but alas, it only lasted for 8 years before we decided to go our separate ways. (We married at the age of 23)

I figured out I couldn't put up with anyone 24/7, and hated being married. I've been single ever since. I still date, but as it stands, I can't imagine myself ever being married again.

On a sidewalk in Boston, outside the Benihana of Tokyo teppanyaki restaurant. We were on a double date; she with a friend of mine from work, I with my then-girlfriend. It was over a year later that we actually met for lunch and talked to each other! Six weeks after that, we were engaged, and a year after that, married.
Whew. 32+ years, 4 children. I never planned any of it. By the time we started dating, I had pretty much given up any expectation of finding a life mate (as had my poor mother and aunts). Our 11 year age difference is still a subject of some amusement: she demands to know why I didn't take her to my high school senior prom, I remind her that we had never met, she was living in another state at the time, and was not yet 7 years of age. She has since forgiven me.

At College. She was staring at me but she says I was staring at her. We cut class a few times and went to
video game arcades and went out a few times. I dropped out of college and moved off to the coast to find
Summer work in the wonderful early 80's. Came back and enrolled in another college, finished college,
gotta job, bought a house and moved into my bachelor pad. Didn't hear from her for a couple years and
she called my old number and my Dad answered and told me a few days later someone called but didn't
remember who. She called again and he took down her name and number and the rest is history, 31 years
of marriage come March 1.

I've got a good story (many layers I won't get into now, I could go on for hours) . We met in a ditch on the side of the road, about a mile from where we now live. We were both EMTs working an accident in front of the high school. It was my call, in my district, but he was fueling up not far away and asked to come and help... I did need the second ambulance so I okayed it. I knew of his existence after that but didn't care to get to know him for seven long months as he worked harder and harder to get me to notice him. He was nice every time I bumped into him, but I just was not interested and didn't realize what his intent was. I didn't want to date, or get married, ever. Part of the reason I eventually gave him the time of day was that I needed another person on my Friday night crew and he was willing to join my department to do that. I became his deputy commander and was always his day or night crew chief, and we were an excellent crew. I guess that was a good way to start out. If you can manage cardiac arrests, traumas, etc. at 2am in a blizzard together, other stuff seems sort of easy.

We married 8 years later and it's been 8 years since. It's been a great life, not what I expected to be doing, but it's good. See, I'm flexible!

At her parents house. I arrived one summer afternoon after driving through flood waters after a torrential rain. I was there to hang out and play D&D with her brother and two of our friends after our Junior year in Engineering School. It was her birthday, and I brought her a card with her favorite cartoon character on it... the helpless little fellow. Ziggy.

I remember her smile as she opened the card, the way the room lit up with her smile, the way her deep brown eyes drew my soul down into them, and the sun shining through the soft cap of brown curls, like a halo. And then her fiancée angrily pulled her away for the rest of the day, and I was left stunned and distracted the rest of the weekend.

At work. But she was married at the time. I was friends with a woman from whom she eventually would rent a room. Got to know her because of the friend. Her then-husband lived 1,000 miles away and was supposed to move down eventually. One night she came back from visiting him and said they were getting divorced. We started dating a couple of months later. Waited for the divorce to be final before I proposed.

Online. But maybe not the usual story.

My first wife of 35 years (both 21 when we got married) passed away after a long bout of cancer. I assumed that I would just stay single and finish raising our 3 kids, because I couldn't imagine dating or even knew how to talk to a woman in that manner. On the other hand, in our final conversations the last few months before she passed my wife insisted that I get remarried for the kids and because "you know you're worthless without a wife".

Several months after the funeral I realized that she was probably right and began to have an interest in another woman (still felt married at first). I had coffee with someone whom I had known for a long time and it was a disaster. I realized that I needed to learn how to develop a personal relationship with a woman so joined E-Harmony. My idea was that I should try to get to know someone without actually having to meet face to face to see if I was really up for this or not.

Surprisingly, met my current wife within a week or so and started an email only relationship. She lived far from me, so it was great. After 3 months of closer and closer conversations by email, I finally went to her city to meet. I remember thinking while I was on the way to meet her that I felt like a man chasing a secret affair. We had a nice date and the next day spent the day together, talking and me listening to her past stories.

I fell in love but it took her a couple of months later to fall in love with me. We've been married for 3 1/2 years now and I couldn't be happier.

That's the short version.

We met in college. Friends for 37 years and married for 28 of those years. I am so grateful for all of those years that we spent together, but it is hard to believe that she's not here.

Reading Drew's story made me think about what my wife use to say to me, including one week before she passed unexpectedly. "Mac, you've got to promise me that if anything should ever happens to me, that you will get to get some "arm candy.""

At this point, I'm not sure if there will be another long-term relationship in my life or not.

Grad school. Our labs were in the attic of the psych building. She was doing neuro stuff and I was studying apes (not in the attic!). I'd hear a dental drill in the next lab and she'd be drilling holes in rat skulls to implant electrodes. Since our lab involved apes/monkeys, we were scattered around during the day and would meet at a local pub in the evenings to drink beer, eat free snacks and talk about our various studies. The other grad students heard about it and started showing up, including the neuro girl. She finished her MA and decided to go into computer work at a rehab center and I finished my doctorate several years later. We got married, I finished and I started my teaching position all within 3 weeks--very busy weeks! That was 36.5 years ago. I'm still at the same college and will retire in 1.5 years. She moved from the rehab center to the Director of System Technology position in a school system and retired from there 5 years ago.

On the playing fields of Harvard, where a bunch of Cambridge ne'er-do-wells recovering from Saturday nights used to gather for a Sunday afternoon softball game. She showed up with a friend who was too old for her. So was I, but she didn't seem to mind. That was over four decades ago.

These are great stories. Thanks for sharing.

My wife introduced herself to me at the Nurse's station of the our hospital during Medical School. I was a 4th year medical student, doing my Infectious Disease rotation. She was a 3rd year doing Internal Medicine. My team had been consulted on a patient her team was caring for who had newly diagnosed HIV (and a CD4 count of 0). She wanted to scoop her teammates on some details but could not read my handwriting (seriously), so she struck up a conversation about a ring I was wearing that has my name in Hebrew.

A few nights later, we were all at a bar. I was friends with another member of her team and hanging out with him. She was trying to get away from her ex-boyfriend, so she came over and sat on my lap and flirted some. A few days later I asked her out for the following weekend. Despite having very little in common (besides medical school), we immediately clicked and spent the next few months together.

The following Summer, I moved to Cincinnati for Residency, so we did long-distance for a year. She said she would move up there if we got engaged (she denies ever saying that). The rest is history. We celebrate our 20th Anniversary next August.
