Bought a Mac SE/30 today
Posted by: bhaveshp

My old Mac SE/30 died a few years back (still have it though). A neighbor was selling this one via Nextdoor and I grabbed it for $100.

Some history behind this - she finally convinced her husband to get rid of some of his hoard. Her husband previously worked at NeXT and Adobe. Of course, my wife groaned when she saw this in the house :-)

Anyway this one is in great physical shape 10/10 and Flying Toasters works as well as it ever did. It'll sit on a corner of my desk and probably get booted up once a year.

damn - very jealous - Congratulations!
After my only-somewhat-successful attempt to get the Mac Plus online the past few days, my next thought was to acquire a SE/30 - but they seem to be fetching quite a premium on ebay at the moment if they're in bootable condition.

A Swedish friend had one when they were new. He put in 5 MB of RAM! I told him he'd never need that much, but good to have...smiley-excited001

Nice ! My SE/30 was totally tricked out... max RAM, a Daystar 68040 accelerator, and a Radius Picot color card and monitor. I used it until about 97... used to log into DealMax starting in 1994 or so with dialup. I sold the whole kit and kaboodle to a coworker in 98.

Nice. I still wish I had grabbed a couple of the Macs that were not taken along when my old employer moved to a smaller office space. One was a Mac II that had been upgraded with a IIfx logic board. It was routing print jobs to an Appletalk-connected printer. An SE was also left behind.

My two SEs still run, but not often. I did let grandkids play with Lode Runner, Crystal Quest, and Dark Castle last summer. Worked fine!

Pretty much the best 68K machine there is. How many open SIM slots? It can take 128 MB, but can only use that much with the right System and Extensions. I would put at least 7.1 on it unless your preferred software requires 6.0.5.

Very nice. My first Mac, purchased in either 1989 or '90 (I can't remember which), got me through college and grad school and a good chunk of my first book before I sold it. By far the best of the black and white original form factor Macs.

I picked up another from a Forumite (either this one or the old Dealmac forum, again I can't remember which), but the monitor won't come on, probably needs a cap kit. Never got around to doing the repair work, so it sits forlornly on a shelf eyeing my old shoebox full of floppies...

Recap it before it kills itself.
Seconded. There are recapping services available on eBay.

Replace the battery also.
Leaking electrolytics (WILL happen, and CAN ruin a motherboard) and exploded/leaking battery can destroy one of these beauties.

Symptoms of leaking electrolytic capacitors include: 1) Having difficulty booting up - needing to switch off and on again to get it booting, 2) Won't boot - screen has vertical lines 3) Quiet sound.

I've personally recapped about 10 of these with complete resolution of the symptoms above, and have had them sitting in my closet for the past 5 years. Great little machines for running several years' worth of 680x0 software, especially when equipped with a 50MHz 030 or 40MHz 040 processor and color video card. My wife wants me to sell 9 of them on eBay, but it's fun having $45,000 worth of SE/30's purchased for between $10 and $50 each.

me too!
I very much would like to get a SE/30 onto the IntarWebs - I have a feeling it would be much more usable than the Mac Plus I've got going - it could probably run much newer browsers and actually be useful.

Pretty sure the symptoms you describe are what happened to my older SE/30. Please PM me if you'd be interested to recap another. I'll also check out the eBay services.

I haven't yet cracked it open, but it only has 2 MB of RAM and 6.0.5 currently. My older one has 8 MB IIRC and an internal ethernet card. I'm tempted to move over the RAM and ethernet card into the working one.

The IIci wasn't an AIO. It did have 32 bit clean ROMs. The IIfx was wicked fast but it had SCSI Voodoo. smiling smiley 2 GB of RAM was a great option back then but I didn't know anybody that spent the $48k to install it.

I just fired this one up. I have to figure out where I put the external HD's for it. I used this computer for years. This SE/30 has a color video card. I have two more SE/30's, no color cards. They do have ethernet cards.

Even if the IIfx were the greatest ever, at $10,000 per next to no one was able to buy one to find out.

Years ago, I was cleaning out a client's old Mac pile and found a $24,000 RAM invoice for a Mac II. I still have a set of those RAM daughtercards.

When I upgraded my Mac SE from 1mb ram to 4mb chips were $249/mb and my Ehman zfp 10mb hard drive cost me $999.

Using those numbers my upgraded Mac Pro 3,1 with 32gb ram and 4 2tb drives is worth:

(30518 * 249/mb) = $7.6 million - memory
(8,388,608 * $100/mb) $838 millon - drive storage

Wow! I guess that makes me a 1%er?

I can actually top that, by quite a bit (no pun intended).

In 1978 we upgraded an original TRS-80 Model I from 4K to 16K, for $199 installed. It was a straight chip swap and we didn't get to keep the prior 4K chips. That's about $12/K, at that rate a 1MB upgrade (if it even existed in 1978) would have cost $12,736 (at 1024K per MB). That would add up to $101,888,000 to get to the puny 8GB (at 1000MB/GB) in my current desktop.

I doubt anybody can accurately calculate the storage difference from a Realistic cassette deck to a 2TB hard drive, though...

I got mine used in the early '90s; can't remember the price, but probably less than $2k. I had been using my souped-up (20mHz accelerator) SE, so the IIfx was quite something. Some years later I got a second one from a 68kMLA member with 16k of RAM. My intent was to combine the two (the first had some problem—can't recall what now) to get one working, but I was using my blue G3 by then and ran out of time for a hobby project. The two are still sitting in a closet.
