After returning the eyeglasses to Zenni I reordered just the frames and took them to Walmart, the only other eyeglasses shop in town. They measured my PD as 66 using a device that looks like an overgrown ViewMaster. I peeked at the digital readout numbers while the box was still turned on and sitting on the desk.

So yeah ... only one mm narrower than the 67 I'd given Zenni. Still, they used slightly different L/R numbers: 32.5mm and 33.5mm

They seem fine, and better than what I got from Zenni. Whether that's the 1mm difference, the individual half-mm fine tuning, better glass (Nikon) or the combo of all of it can't say.

The person fitting me today did say that with progressives you will always have to basically look through the middle of the lenses, whereas with single vision that's not as much of a problem. And yes I was told that "even 1mm, for some people, can be a significant difference."

So I don't know, this will take some getting used to. I've been wearing them for 2.5 hrs and they're OK. I still don't like having to move my head like a bird to see leftward/rightward, especially in front of a computer.

As far as peripheral vision goes, especially peripheral vision up close, nothing holds a candle to my multifocal contacts. I just can't wear those all day, or even for most of the day.

It took me about five years to get used to how progressive lenses mess up my depth perception so I wasn't hitting things with my shins. I currently prefer using single prescription for extended computer work or reading.

I can't do single prescription for computer work unless I want everything beyond 2-3 feet, or closer, to be a blur.

Edit: I could use my single vision glasses with the compute by holding them about 2-3 inches in front of my face so that they effectively became weaker.

Ergo, eyeglasses with telescoping stems should be a thing. (Invest your stock in my start-up Kickstarter now.)

I wouldn't have to do any of this if I could put contacts in first thing in the morning (the PH or something is wrong and they sting unless I wait about an hour and then put them in ...) or if they'd last more than 3-5 hours before one of them either started to move on my eye or dried out or both. Or if my eyesight was perfect.

I got some locally ordered progressives a few years ago - I couldn’t wear them - they made me nauseous - ordered bifocals, work great...

1. You'll get used to them in about 2-3 days of regular use. If you don't wear them all day, you may never get used to them.

2. Many places -- notably Lenscrafters -- offer an "enhanced" progressive lens with a slightly wider region of undistorted view in the middle for a little extra money. They promote the lenses as a 30-40% improvement, but it's certainly not a 30-40% increase in undistorted area. IMHO, although it's just an extra mm or two to each side, it nevertheless makes progressives much more comfortable to wear and easier to adjust to.

I love my progs from the git go. But I'm blind as a bat. I use to really like the prog contacts as well, but I scripted out them. No I use mono-vision combo. Not as good for night driving with out glasses on top.
We've been going to a local franchise (Sterling) for the last 20 years. Been very happy.

Your lens starts out life as a round blank with a lens center that must be centered over your pupil (normal/usual circumstances) or you won't be able to wear them comfortably.

Depending on what company made your lens and what they engrave on the lens the fitter can see those markings in a contrast box and/or lensometer to check that they were cut right and to match your PD.
Cut wrong is like trying to wear pants that don't fit.

Your fitter should ask you to read something like a brochure and to look at a specific thing in the distance to assess how you are pointing your nose to "see".
They may have even checked your head posture with your previous glasses along with checking how your lenses were made.

Given the number of lens manufacturers and variations in progressives with tall and short, wide and narrow vision corridors, fitting and lens selection for progressives becomes very important beyond the needs of your prescription corrections.

Who does that when you buy progressive lenses online ?
Course, some of the chains don't have good fitters in the stores either so what are you going to do.

Bill, the type of fitting you describe was done by Walmart yesterday, both by reading a brochure and looking off into the distance. The lenses came with black markings on them. When I wore the eyeglasses the first time, they gauged if those markings corresponded to where my pupils are, before cleaning them off.

If correctly fitted, and measured to your pupil., my experience.

I have always used the glasses from Kaiser, or the last time Costco.

I have never had to return the glasses. (All Progressive Veriflex (sp))

The very first time I got progressive, I had to go back and have them adjust how they sit on my face.

But the very first time I got progressive it took a few days before I forgot about the left right having to move your head, GONE AWAY.

Try to be patient, and if it doesn't go well, go back during your warrantee period. But my experience was that it gets better. Search online GOOGLE, about peoples experiences, as well

I'd be surprised if only 1 mm change in PD would make that much difference. It's only .040" or .020" per eye. At least, I don't think it would for me. I can move my glasses that distance and don't notice a difference. But we're all different.

I used to think I needed really high quality progressives (this is not political), like from Zeiss, which I used exclusively for years. Others gave my eye strain for any viewing distance, but the Zeiss only caused strain at the computer. I asked the optometrist at Kaiser (whom I 've also used for years) to give me single vision prescriptions for distant, computer, and reading distances and for progressives. The correction for this prescription was a little weaker than the last. He said he backed it off because of the eye strain.

Rather than pay the $300* for the lenses through Kaiser, I went to Costco and got theirs for $160. They are MUCH better for compouter use, though my prescription computer glasses are much better.

Take away for me is that if the correction is backed off a bit, I get less eye strain with progressive lenses, and I don't really have to have Zeiss anymore, though I still think they're the best. Sure do like their camera lenses.

I got progressive about 7 years ago. I got used to them very quickly. Then 5 years later I got a new pair. Same doctor, slightly different prescription, same lab, better technology. I could not get used to them. Went back, they changed the lenses in new frames, put new lenses with the old prescription, old tech. I still could get used to them. I still wear the same old pair I got 7 years ago. I am due for a new exam. I dread the thought that I will spend again ~$300 on a pair I can't use.

By wearing the same pair of glasses for so long you could be making your adjustability or flexibility problem worse.
Sometimes a big change in scrip can cause you to be nauseous and they'll give you a scrip that is less than 100% correction.

Yes, a silly mm can make a difference in user experience, so get the lenses dialed in and the world will be your oyster... and the different variants can affect how well they seem to work, so it may take a couple of tries to find the variant that works best for the user. I wouldn't mail/online order progressives unless I had a known, good, working Rx that was essentially being duplicated, otherwise it's too easy to be a mm, or more, off that makes the glasses unusable and then you have to deal w/ redos. Nikon is good stuff, hopefully you have the battle won this time.

As important as getting the Rx right is the fitting. A good optician will get the frames fitted to your face and head, and I know of very few who will work on mail order glasses. For me that makes a huge difference as my nose id crooked due to it being broken when I was very young. In addition getting the bows sitting properly on my ears is important for wearing the glasses any length of time.

Yes! A problem I've run into more than once is getting the right length temples. It seems some opticians or frames suppliers don't offer extra length temples. As a result some frames' earpieces would sit on my ear instead of behind it. So my choice of frames is limited.

Years ago I used to go to a place called Jenkel Davidson in Oakland. What they didn't know about glasses didn't exist. They did great work.

Then I went to Franklin Optical which I think is also out of business. There was a Four Eyes in Berkeley that was pretty good, but haven't been there in years.

I just got an exam and refraction at Kaiser, but am not a big fan of their optical department. I did get two pair of progressives from them but it took four visits.
