Kitchen sink cloged, but rest of house fine... snake didnt help...NVM

2 sinks, 70/30 split, small sink has disposal. Small sink gets clogged, running disposal forces yuck water back into main sink.... then nothing drains.

Ive taken apart the pipes below the sink, all clear. Ran a 25' snake down the drain the back, all clear.

When it gets full, unscrewing the the emergency drain on the outside of the house below the kitchen window instantly clears it. Of course, now all the water is in the flower bed.

Maybe a longer snake? Might not be reaching all the way to the main sewer line? Drano? Some other over the counter option before I call a plumber...

Snake from the emergency drain each way and see if you can clear it.

I second trying to snake it from the other access point, and possibly get a longer snake. You may be able to rent one that is much longer than 25 feet. In any case, skip the Drano.

Wow, we have the exact same problem. I saw the subject and thought Mrs M A V I C had posted this. On Sunday I got a 25' snake and got it working well for a couple days, but now it backs up again (though not as quickly.) We don't have an emergency drain though, that I know of. I'm going to try Drano next.

Cloged drains require a very specifically manufactured snake.

Does the kitchen sink drain have its own vent ?

Approximately how far until the next plumbing fixture in the house? You need to be able to snake all the way past that. Does the main sink fill up if you let the water run long enough without using the disposal?

That 'emergency drain' is called a "Cleanout". You rent a big honking power snake and run the snake down the cleanout away from the kitchen. And dig out whatever clogs are in there too. Since the rest of your house is draining (or you have mentioned it), the clog is probably between the kitchen cleanout and the main drain line in your house.

And once done, the usual commentaries... avoid grease, fibrous debris, etc... Good luck !

I used to have to rent a huuge power snake every two years and clean out the main sewer line from my house, because my neighbor had a willow tree about 200 feet away. That damn thing sent roots into the drain pipes and was happily eating our.. um.. sewage...

I don't mess with Drano. When I get a drain pipe clog, it's sulfuric acid drain cleaner all the way.

Ya just have to be careful with that stuff.

I've had very good luck with drain bladders but primarily on sewage lines downstream from the cleanout. They'll work in the smaller house line drains as well but some particular conditions need to exist (no vents or other fixture between the bladder and clog). Overview: [www.thespruce.com]

They're cheap too, $10-20 depending on size. They have saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars prior to the city redoing the laterals to our house.

Have you checked the roof vent for blockage?

Had a nasty blockage here last year and the plumber was cussing for an hour. It required a 50' snake and only at the very end of it did he manage to clear the block.

most likely the drain out of the disposal is blocked
typically the outlet has an elbow that is bolted on. Take it off and you will probably see it is all clogged up.
I am an experienced person on this. My wife thinks it is OK to put fibrous material like Asparagus ends. She seems to think our disposal should be able to handle anything she puts in it and thinks ours is defective

All done. He snaked from the outside drain about 40 feet, and it cleared it. About 30 minutes.

Do you pour grease down the drain? Use one of the enzyme drain cleaners once a month. It's not as effective as the caustic cleaners but it's a little safer.

hardly put/pour anything down the drain ever, almost all food scraps go into trash.

Been in the house 15 years, first time I have ever had to call a plumber for something beyond what I could fix myself.

I bought a 100’ snake from Harbor Freight and was ahead of the game the first time I used it, three times ago.

Sounds like you need a "Tim the Toolman Taylor" disposal. :-)

We had the same thing happen with our kitchen drain years ago and a 25 foot snake cleared it. Since then I've filled the sink with hot water and added some boiling water to bring it to about 150 degrees and then let the whole thing go at once. I do that a couple of times a year and we haven't had a problem since. Even though we never put substantial food in the disposal I assume that grease gradually builds up in the pipes. I figure the very hot water will clear that as long as it doesn't build up too much.
