The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advice for people thinking about traveling to most parts of Brazil: get vaccinated against yellow fever, or stay home.

Brazil is currently suffering a major outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever, and it’s striking places that don’t normally see the virus. Since the beginning of 2017, 237 people, including several tourists, have died after becoming infected with the virus.

Carried by mosquitoes, the virus has also spread to the very edge of Brazil’s largest cities, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and has also infected mosquitoes on the Ilha Grande, a major tourist destination not far from Rio.

The health service in Sao Paulo vaccinated us for free. It takes ten days for the vaccine to go into full effect. We got vaccinated because we were going to Mato Grosso, which the epidemic has missed this time, but were glad to have it when we got back to Sao Paulo, where it has shown up, killing monkeys in the parks.

You can exchange the white certificate they give you for the yellow international certificate at an office at the airport, which is only open normal business hours, so we were out of luck with that.

Paraguay has closed its borders to travelers from Brasil who do not have the yellow certificate.

Daughter is going to Costa Rica (Pacific coast) in August/Sept.

Don't worry about that..there's a vaccine for it that is nearly completely effective and completely safe. Only an idiot wouldn't get themselves or their children vaccinated.
