Who has CFL's in their home?
Posted by: mikebw

CFL- Compact Flourescent, light bulbs. This isn't new technology, but is seems only 6% of homes use them instead of older less efficient blubs.

"A compact fluorescent has clear advantages over the widely used incandescent light — it uses 75 percent less electricity, lasts 10 times longer, produces 450 pounds fewer greenhouse gases from power plants and saves consumers $30 over the life of each bulb. But it is eight times as expensive as a traditional bulb, gives off a harsher light and has a peculiar appearance."

Anyone here use CFL's in the home? What has been your experience with the quality of light, and the savings on your electric bill? My apartment complex uses all CFL's in the overhead fixtures, and they even replace them for you when they go out so I don't have to worry about the cost. Of course my electric bill is covered in my rent so it's really in their best interest to get the KWh's down.

EDIT: and please, let's not turn this into a Wal-Mart thread.

Yup-use the full-spectrum ones:

www.fullspectrumsolutions.com

And they're crazy bright! You can put in a 40 watt bulb and get the equivalent of 300 watts of light. Very, v-e-r-y nice during winter, with less sunlight.

Just can't use 'em with dimmers; not a big problem, really.

There's not a single incandescent bulb in my house, including the refrigerator.

Throughout the house I have either T8 electronic ballast 4' fluorescents, or a myriad assortment of CFl bubs. Really like the 30W variety in can lights - they do an excellent job. And 3 way fluorescent bulbs in the living room.

Couldn't be happier with them. Especially, since as of Jan 1st, our local Com Ed's rate freeze (10 years now) has expired, and we've been told our rates will increase this month 26%. Could be worse - central IL's power company goes up 51% I heard. YIKES....

Good Luck!

There are dimmable versions - a little more money but they are out there

It really helps when the local utility subsidizes them so they are less than $2 each. I replaced all of the bulbs in my apartment and about 80% of the bulbs in my mom's house.

Nope NOT A single one. You will NEVER see one in my home/ shop/ ect.......
it all has to do with color tempiture. Flourescent light bulbs are no where near natural light.

about half, and counting..., as the old ones burn out, most get replaced w/ CFL's, except for the vanity lights in the bathrooms and the funky little candlestick lights in a hanging fixture... light quality seems mixed from bulb to bulb, mostly get whatever they have at costco...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

You can get full spectrum bulbs but they are generally not at your local hardware store and a little more expensive.

Color spectrum corrected florescent lights are a standard in the most color critical industries out there
including light boxes for photography and printing industries and textiles, ink, dye, and
paint standardized and evaluations / matching and more.
HMI's are standards in film and TV production and moving into digital photography
Even my local body shops use 56K as a standard for paint booths

So what color temps are "natural" for you ? What standard ?

5000 K D50 (US standard) and 6500 K D65 (Europe standard) ?

And yes I actually own color meters that I have worked with them
for over 25 years in the most critical of applications.

I would have said the exact same thing as lafinfil, but he got here first.

even if you don't do that, you can use GE Reveal bulbs, and the 75 watters seem as bright as a 100 watt standard incandescent. Thats what I use in my home office for fairly critical color work on the computers.

I have them in most lamps at my house. I don't use them for power savings though, I use them so I don't have to change bulbs as often. I calculated the savings once and realized it was negligible. It's the big appliances that suck the juice.

I mostly have CFLs now throughout the house. The little 9W (approx = 30W incand's) lamps are great in my range hood and in the fridge. I got some Westinghouse units in reflector flood bases/housings, and nearly all of them have failed within 2 years of intermittant use -- just not good at all. The ones I've gotten from Costco and Home Despot have generally been good -- if they last longer than a week, they will go the distance.

Color temp is iffier -- my earliest CFLs were notably green. The latest ones have been evenly white and are good to read by.

Replaced all our upstairs bulbs with CFCs last year, ran out part way through the downstairs (downstairs is being rebuilt post-K, all new wiring, didn't think to order enough bulbs for downstairs). Will be ordering more this week! Don't know if I can replace the bulbs in the track lighting in our art gallery with CFCs, need to do some research there.

Can't say about the energy savings as our utility company has gone crazy and sends everyone bills that have nothing to do with anything!

True, but on a larger scale if everybody switches the bulk of their bulbs to CFL, the energy savings would be quite significant. Glad you did your own research though, and the convenience factor is important to understand too.

Plus is power is green to begin with (I think.)

My biggest complaints about CFLs are:
- The base is generally larger than a regular bulb so it will not fit in many fixtures
- The bulbs are often not the standard dimensions for their size. For example, the bulbs in my kitchen (R30?) stick down an extra half inch which makes the recessed lighting no longer recessed.
- The bulbs are often brighter than their rating suggests
- They don't handle cold temps very well. If I don't leave my exterior lights on all the time, for ~4 months out of the year they will not turn on at night.
- They don't last anywhere near as long as advertised. I've tried a few different brands.
- Some of them buzz. In my kitchen I had ten lights and when each one buzzed it was rather loud.
- There's a delay when turning them on. Three-way CF bulbs have a delay in between levels.

Sure I've returned many brands and models, but it gets old continually trying to search for a bulb that doesn't have a ton of problems.

I got some smaller (physically smaller) CFC's, I think at Lowes, for the few smaller lamps we have - you might look for some like that for the fixtures you're having problems with.

I have them in about 80% of the sockets and am replacing the incandescents as they burn out. However some of the older ones have a very slow light-up time which is quite annoying.

I've got several of CFLs, the ones with spiral shape that replace regular incondescent bulbs. On the first ones I installed I wrote the date of installation.

So far they aren't lasting any longer than regular bulbs. And of course the CFLs cost ten times more than regular bulbs. So I'm not likely to buy any more. I feel I've been sold a bill of goods.

I use the CFLs rated for outdoor use for in cold locations. It helps to read the specs on the box.
Incandescant lights filament can buzz.
Cheap incandescants would only last 6 months here. Better ones would last longer. So I compare the better ones with the incandescants.

I'm finding some of mine that are now six years old are getting a bit slow to turn on.
Newer ones are improved, compared to even just 5 years ago.

Recycling them can be a pain for some, but we recycle so much here now, that it's becoming a regular part of life.

I tried using them in place of 60w bulbs in overhead fixtures (enclosed in hemispherical glass). They've burned out extremely quickly in that setting.

Otherwise I've been happy w/them, though I think I leave them on a lot more than I would an incandescent because a) I know it's sucking less juice, and b) I don't like the dim time when they're warming up.

You have to use CFL's rated for use in enclosures, or they will burn out faster. Not all are, but the 6 pack of 14 W bulbs I bought from Home Depot were. Used them in place of 60 W bulbs in a number of enclosed ceiling fixtures and they are still going good. They have lasted longer than incandescent bulbs so far, will have to see if they last the 7 years they were warrantied for. These CFL's were also rated for outdoor use, but only in enclosed fixtures.

I'm about 50-50 here. I have a lot of dimmers-bedrooms, hall, dining room-that still have incandescants. I took out the dimmer in the family room so I could replace all the recessed lighting with CF, but I may go back because we like the variable lighting. I have CF outside but leave them on 24x7.

I've used them for about 10 years now; they used to cost $15/each. Everyone has just about covered the constant improvements above. I love the savings in energy/dollars.
I don't care if they don't last longer; I'm just trying to save a barrel or two of oil now and then.

It may be that those that have CF bulbs failing in a short time are turning them on/of multiple times a day. That will cut down on their life span quite a bit. That 10,000 hour rating is probably based on something like 10 continuous hours a day.

I have a CF bulb in our porch light on a sensor, and it must have 5000 hours on it by now. Turns on and off one cycle a day.

I'v swapped out about 80% of my 60 watt bulbs for CFLs. The only remaining incandescents are 6 bulbs in the basement, 2 bulbs in dimmer lights and 4 bulbs outside. The bulbs in the basement are rarely used, and I haven't bought outdoor use or dim-able CFLs yet.

I have a number of irregular bulbs that haven't been swapped out because the specialty CFLs are quite a bit more expensive.

I have noticed more and more are coming with smaller diameter bases. My problem is that that the daylight bulbs are way tio blue for my tastes, butb the regular ones are way too green/green yellow. If someone would make some 4100K bulbs that are reasonably neutral for a reasonable price, I would get a bunch.

The fullspectrum ones from fullspectrumsolutions are very, very comparable to natural sunlight. They're not perfect, but they're much better than anything else I've seen-halogen, incandescent (including those pink colored ones) or regular flurescent (sp).

I've been using these for five years, and they're great. My wife uses them in her light box for Season Affect Disorder--she says they work well, and make a difference.

i've been using them for over 15 years. they used to be ridiculously expensive but no longer. i had one bulb in my kitchen last 11 years. i replaced it because it got dimmer, not because it stopped working.

i think the only incandescent bulb in my house is in my fridge and the reptile tank; the gecko likes the heat. i especially like it for outdoor fixtures. i think i replace my front porch light about every 7 years or so. the car port light stays on all night and is on a timer so it tends to die once a year.

since i've been doing this so long i have no idea how much i'm saving; i just know i am and doing good for the planet. i do know my brother is saving on air conditioning. the overhead lights in his office really heated up his room. i replaced the bulbs with CFLs and in the summer he was able to turn the setting on his AC down!

graylocks, for every watt of light output, it takes a watt of A/C to cancel it out. So if he went from 300 watts in his office down to 50, he needs 250 watts less A/C to keep that office cool. Or in my case, that is an extra 250 watts to run some other equipment on that same circuit.

This is why so many office buildings went to flourescent lighting years ago. being able to install HVAC systems that are 1/4 smaller (or whatever) is a HUGE deal.

I didn't know there were some rated specifically for outdoor use. I did read the specs on the package. I just re-read the package of the ones I'm having problems with outdoors, and there's no indication they aren't for use outdoors.

I bought these about a year ago.

I might buy some of those full spectrum ones and try those out. So far I have yet to see any CF that doesn't have a lag on startup.

Since we run our house on solar powerr, one of the first things we did was reduce demand by switching to CFLs as much as possible. We probably have about 70% cfl. The areas where we don't use them are vanity lights, a few dimmable halogen spotlights, and some preexisting 12v halogen lights. It does take a little bit of experimentation to find the right lights for the job, and there is too little info available on specific bulbs (i.e. which ones are instant on, what the color temperatre is, ability to fit fixtures, etc), but that is a miniscule price to pay given the huge environmental benefit we all derive from them. The bottom line is basically that it costs you nothing (when you consider replacement costs) to cut your lighting energy usage by 70% by switching to CFLs.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Mavic, they aren't really outside rated (as in cold) unless they say so on the package, or possibly screened onto the base as well.

Also, most CF bulbs aren't for closed enclosure use unless they say so.

When you use fixture of this type, they hold all the heat inside, and it will build up. Incandescent bulbs are obviously built to take high heat, but the circuitry in the average CF bulb isn't.

These actually have insulation in their base to insulate the ceiling from the heat of the bulbs. This causes all of it to stay inside the fixture.

I have a normal CF bulb in my enclosed porch light. But since it is so cool 8 months out of the year here at night, it isn't that big of a deal, and the metal acts as a decent heat sink anyway.

I see. I only went by what was written and didn't know there was more to it that isn't on the package. None of the lights I've had problems with going out are in a closed fixture.

The ones I have also say they are cool and safe to use in fixtures.

Just because some cf bulbs are rated for use in an enclosed fixture doesn't mean the fixture is rated for that. The glass bowl on an enclosed fixture can shatter from the heat. It could kill somebody.

Quote

The bulbs are often brighter than their rating suggests.

CF bulbs quickly lose about 10% of their brightness, and then slowly lose more.

You can't really use the 13w cf = 60 watt incandescent equivalencies, because A) 60 watt bulbs from different manufacturers could put out widely different lumens, and B) CF bulbs dim as they age.

I've yet to have a CF bulb burn out, but I have replaced a few because they grew dim.

Not sure what you mean by that. CF bulbs are cooler than incandescent. So if a fixture can handle an incandescent, it can surely handle a CF.

Well, I guess I have my work cut out for me when I get home tonight.

I just replaced the bulbs in my garage fixture with two CFL bulbs. Which means -

1. the fixture is tied to the garage door, meaning it will cycle on and off every time we use the door.
2. it is in the unheated (cool) garage)
3. the fixture is enclosed, having reused a hallway ceiling fixture that we replaced.

Guess I'll put the ol' incandescents back in there and save the CFL's for a more appropriate location.
