most advantageous way to use a visa gift card?

I figured some of you fellow cheapskates would know how to get the best bang for the $200 in gift cards I have in my paw at the moment. Ideas?

buy an amazon gift card for yourself. balance never expires. Great way to avoid expiring visa gift cards and/or monthly fees that some of them have. of course, if you don't use Amazon, this may not be a great tip.

Are they "Debit" gift cards, with a pin code?

Those can be used to buy money orders. This can require a bit of luck/work though as not every place will allow you to do so. It's best to not mention that it's a "gift card" if you can avoid it.

Yup, this is what I do. I find those things too hard to use at a regular store. Ok, maybe for one or two purchases when your total is less than the gift card. But when you have like $14.77 left on it? Yup, buy an Amazon Gift Card.

You don't actually have to buy yourself a gift card though. There's a "replenish balance" option which is more convenient. But yea, I was sending myself gift cards via e-mail before I figured that out.

Either Amazon gift card to self, or next choice would be to pay off recurring monthly bill such as cellphone or cable. Trick is to use it quickly before cannibal fees eat it up.

Amazon card, or log into the card issuer's "check your balance" site....I had a card I received as a rebate, went to check the remaining balance one day and found they had an option to transfer the remaining balance to your bank account.

You may be able to deposit it into your bank account. I got a cash card as a rebate on Costco’s T-Mobile two-for-one iPhone deal last fall, I went to my credit union and they were able to deposit the dough in my account. They were a bit surprised the transaction went through...

You can spend them at the HD. If the balance won’t cover the whole amount, you can pay the rest with another CC, cash or debit.

The nice teller at the bank does a cash advance for me, and since the card is a prepaid Visa, no way to charge me any fees or interest. Works every time, for me.
