Whats your fav way to make hard boiled eggs?
Posted by: mattkime
Date: April 09, 2018 11:15AM
I'm attempting the paleo diet and I'm replacing my morning oatmeal with a pair of hard boiled eggs and some fruit. Steaming eggs for 15 min on the stovetop has worked well for me so far but I'm trying to work toward something a bit more convenient. I bike to work and transporting eggs...I can do it, but I'd rather not. I thought I might figure out a way to boil them at work.

Any tips?

Set the alarm clock 10-15 minutes earlier and eat breakfast at home.

My wife has been buying them pre-boiled and peeled from the grocery store lately. A little pricey (6 for $2.19) but WAAAY more convenient.

.....they have the new, no fuss egg cookers where you can stick 6-12 eggs in them and they make them without a timer........

We bought one of those rapid egg cookers for xmas -- its by far the easiest way to hard boil eggs. I put them in the kids lunches, peel first then put in a little hard plastic containter. Easy peasy.

6 minutes in my Instant Pot. put a cup of water in the bottom, the eggs of a strainer, seal it and go -- perfect every time. The pressure also gets between the egg and the shell, separating the two. The shell just peels away cleanly and easily. You can do 1 or a couple dozen in the same 6 minutes.

boil the egg in the evening, eat next day at work. A boiled egg will last a long time not refrigerated.

Definitely recommend a pressure cooker. We set ours to cook for 4 minutes, but factor in a little more for the time required to come to pressure.

1. Put 4 eggs in a small pan
2. fill pan with cold water until eggs are submerged
3. bring to boil, go to step 4 immedialety
4 as soon as boiling remove pan from burner and cover and sit for ten minutes.
5. plunge under cold water and remove shells.

I make a batch, peel them, and put them in a covered, glass Rubbermaid container with a paper towel in the bottom. Take out a couple every morning to eat as is or mash up with mayo for egg salad.

My wife purchased a hard boiled egg maker. I made fun of her for it, but I'm sold now. We have 3 chickens and they produce 2-3 eggs/day. Every Sunday she hard boils a dozen or more eggs and makes deviled eggs seasoned with Harissa. Usually Harissa is kind of expensive in grocery stores, but I found a brand at the local Grocery Outlet that's cheap so I bought 4-5 jars and we've been livin' like royalty.

We snack on them throughout the week. It's delicious.

How have I been doing it lately?

Electric hot water kettle... drop in a couple or three eggs. Overfill with water enough to cover, plus a cup of tea's worth.
Turn on. Allow to boil. Start 8 minute timer. Pour water for a cup of tea. Leave the kettle alone for 8 minutes.
When the timer beeps, dump hot water out, flush with cold. Remove eggs.
Caveat: I like my hard boiled eggs slightly under-done. Not quite "soft boiled", but a certain orange tint and non-crumbly, non-liquid, softness. Add a minute or two if you like a more "done" egg.

ztirffritz,

I see that your cooker, originally about $30, is being sold USED on Amazon for over 4 times that amount, and a new one is advertised for over $200. I guess they ain't makin' em any more.

Your wife made a great call.

you could move to Phoenix and leave the egg on the sidewalk at noon for a couple of minutes.
maybe pay someone to go pick it up

We got one, too. I'm incredibly lazy and it is perfect for me.

I forgot to mention, it is ideal if one wants to boil eggs at work.

So, you would rather not transport hard boiled eggs to work but rather transport fresh eggs in-the-shell and boil them at work...

Put enough water into pot to cover eggs. Heat to roiling boil. Turn off, wait 10 minutes. Put eggs into cold water right away.

Time may vary by a minute or two either way.

I've used this many, many times. Easy, and good results.

One cooking method not mentioned yet (wait, why are we talking about cooking?) is baking. Was my preferred method before the egg cooker.

Seriously, the little cooker is amazing, and you could easily do it at work. There is ZERO cleanup.

Poke a hole, put egg in tray, add 1/8 cup water, put on cover, push button, walk away. Timer sounds when done. Rinse off tray and lid. Peel, eat. No pan, no boiling water, no "rolling boil", no varying times, no stove, and PERFECT every time.

Only thing is other peoples noses. My wife cant stand the smell of hard boiled eggs cooking. So we are not allowed unless shes not home and gone for awhile.

It seems to me that using a pressure cooker would yield oval rocks instead of hard boiled eggs.

Unless you time your cooking time down to the microsecond.

I used the instant pot - I did 5 min high pressure, 5 min until i took the top off. The eggs are super easy to peel but just a touch over cooked. Next time I'll open the top a bit quicker.

Long run, maybe I'll get an egg cooker so I can buy and cook them at work instead of transporting.

The Instant Pot for me, definitely! Just one cup of water and however many eggs I want to stack on the little rack, and I normally set for five minutes.

As Ombligo said, one egg cooks just like a dozen, so it's easy to experiment to find the perfect timing for your eggs in your kitchen. Maybe four minutes will be better for you! Or you may need to release the pressure right away instead of letting the pot sit for the extra time. There is also a low pressure setting that some folks swear by (see the chart [www.hippressurecooking.com]); but the default high pressure seems to work fine for me.

Happy cooking!

I've got one of those 7-egg, domed cookers. Maybe 20 different 'brands' make by the same kids in Guangzhou, very similar to the Krups in principle. Paid $13.

I use it to poach eggs, but it's a dicey proposition to get them just right— over medium with whites dry and yoke runny.

One the yoke is over done (read: hard boiled) the texture and taste don't appeal to me at all, except for deviled egg.

I boil my water first, and use the 8, 10, 12 rule for doneness, which is pretty accurate. The variable is how cold the eggs are, and how many are added tothe water.
