"Sunday, R. Lee Ermey’s long time manager informed the world a little after 6:30pm EST that the beloved R. Lee Ermey “The Gunny” passed away Sunday morning due to complications from pneumonia.

Ermey was a beloved actor, Marine and staple of American culture."

He redefined the role of D.I. in the movies.

Well worth 10 minutes -- [www.youtube.com]

I don't know much about Gunny, but I recall an anecdote about him being a technical advisor on being a DI in Full Metal Jacket and said he could do the job better than the actor.

The rest is history.

Even though it was a movie, I bet he put the fear of God into the actors during shooting.

He deserves every accolade and I hope he got rich. His featured role in "Boys" pre-dated FMJ by 9 years. Not sure what he did in between.

Wikipedia shows he did Apocalypse Now (1979), Up from the Depths (1979), and Purple Hearts (1984). He became a very busy guy after FMJ.

Wiki also says he gave 'one of the rare performances Stanley Kubrick ever allowed to be improvised'. It also mentions his role as technical advisor who became the DI.

I remember him in a few TV roles, and of course FMJ. I didn't know he was in Boys. I may have that in the Drobo. He was uncredited in Apocalypse.

He was actually a staff sergeant in the USMC. His gunny rank was honorary after he made it big. he joined up after a judge gave him the choice of enlisting or going to jail when he was 17. He made the right choice.

Solid guy, IMO. Loved his DI act in the movies. I suspect in real life, he made a few soldiers poo their pants.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps gave him the honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant in 2002. Given his career he might have made that rank if he had not been medically discharged due to injuries.

He played a detective in a Miami Vice episode too. Wore a suit, which looks odd on him in retrospect.

And I swear to god he and Jesse Ventura were "Men in Black" in an X Files episode. Couldn't find a credit for that though.

Alex Trebek and Jesse "The Body". Yes, a weird combination which fit like a glove in that episode. "Jose Chung's", IIRC.
