Anyone ever made their own short-run books?

Hardcover, perfect bound ... maybe some photos. 300 copies. Do they still do/require pre-press for this stuff or can you just stick .25 in a machine somewhere and it all happens by "AI"?

50 some odd years ago I was in the printing biz, and we did that stuff by hand, the old fashioned way. Nowadays, it's just send the computer file off to somewhere and they come back all done.

Outfits like Lulu.com can take your pdf, and print and bind it in a number of sizes and styles... they can also put them in Amazons and other booksellers supply chains.

I sell 4-10 copies a month, and get the “royalties” from the sales (you define your “cut”, Lulu takes their cut, and the printing costs are fixed).

You can also buy one or a thousand (or any number in between) copies for yourself.
It took a couple months for my titles to actually GET listed on Amazon, but once there, I do nothing, and copies sell...

Generally, I’m pleased with the arrangement.

Care to share what your book is? I'm curious (PM me if you'd rather not post publicly).

Check CreateSpace on Amazon. It's easy-peasy. Books can be ordered on CreateSpace or Amazon. They print them when they are ordered.

I am thinking a much nicer book than what Amazon pumps out. Part art photo book, part story, part doodles.

Zero... well, the getting of the ISBN and getting it into purchasing channels costs (I forget how much, but it was under $100 ). But printing copies for yourself was zero up front, just printing and shipping costs. Plus, others can buy through Lulu.com direct if you make your project available.

Lulu.com does photobooks, but I haven’t seen one, so I can’t say if they’re any good.

Thanks! My wife is completing a book and was just going to go a PDF only route (selfpublishing). But this seems much better for going hard-copy.

I’m sure there are lots of other choices in the market, but I have been happy with them.
Just make sure you lay the book out for one of the sizes they will put an ISBN on - it’s annoying to have to do it over!
