Anyone used Remote desktop to connect an XP client to a W2K host

Work Related - trying to wean us off VNC to Remote Desktop and it runs fine on XP to XP but everything I read suggests there's no simple way to connect a XP client to a W2K host. I need a GUI - so using the terminal method isn't an option. Trying to get these misers to pop for a few more XP licenses will be a real PITA, so any suggestions are welcome. Security issues will not let us use the Web browser based method.

Yes. I use RDC to connect to W2K and XP hosts, from India to US. I personally did not set up the W2K side of things, though. But from what I do know, it was not much involved.

I do not believe that Remote Desktop supports connecting to W2K workstations. W2K servers it does though. Even the Mac version of Remote Desktop does not support W2K desktops. Look at the bottom of the following page for the System Requirements for the Mac version:

Right on that - I'm wondering if anyone has found a way around the limitation. It looks like I have a bunch of XP installs in my future - Remote Desktop so blows VNC away! Using it as I speak. Not on this machine tho...

You can not connect to Windows 2000 workstations, unless it is of a server variety...despite what one poster mentioned above that he has. Win2K does not include Terminal Server to allow this to happen.

Depending on your usage, Remote Desktop is better than VNC overall; however, for quick looksies and if you have different screen resolutions between client and host machines...VNC is better in this regard. (RDC changes the resolution to match the client machine...when the user of the remote machine logs back on, their windows/icons positions tend to be 'moved').

I suggest stick to VNC with the W2K machines, or look into another solution such as Symantec's pcAnywhere Corporate Edition that is compatible with any flavor of Windows(my preference before MS' RDC become more feature-rich and integrated well enough into XP).

Thanks for the responses - I already Googled and read countless pages before posting, but didn't find an answer. After spending the better part of the day working on a remote XP host from my desktop XP client machine, I convinced the powers that be (so far anyway) that moving to XP on the machines still running W2K is a wise move, so, problem solved. Now I have to find time to set up those hosts and the assorted software we run on them.
