I have an older Macbook running 10.6.8 that works fine for the Quickbooks stuff my wife does for our company.
I have an extra monitor and set it up so she can use it instead of the 13" Macbook screen.

I got the Macbook and the monitor to talk...up to a point. I can see her desktop on the monitor, but no cursor, so you really can't do anything.

I'm sure there's an easy fix for this, I just can't figure out what it is.

I tried by using the track pad but the cursor stops at the edge of the Macbook screen.

Open up "Display" in System Preferences so you can see both monitors. The way in which they "line up" will show you the boundary where your mouse's cursor can cross from one screen to the other.
