One space or two at the end of a sentence?
Posted by: Speedy

“The researchers then clamped each student’s head into place, and used an Eyelink 1000 to record where they looked as they silently read 20 paragraphs. The paragraphs were written in various styles: one-spaced, two-spaced,  and strange combinations like two spaces after commas,  but only one after periods.  And vice versa, too.

And the verdict was: two spaces after the period is better.  It makes reading slightly easier.  Congratulations, Yale University professor Nicholas A. Christakis.  Sorry, Lifehacker.

Read the paper if you want to know the outcome. Comprehension was not changed. They used a large 14 uniform spacing font to showcase the difference.

And still it didn’t really matter.

Changing the font / contrast would be far more impressive results.

The actual result is that it doesn’t really make a difference to most readers.

I’m so sick of seeing that double space crap in proportional type. It’s a typewriter convention that needs to freaking vanish.

I still see people using multiple spaces to center text in MS Word!!!

They demonstrated one of the many exceptions to the one-space rule.

There's little or no debate that two spaces is acceptable when using a monospaced font.

I'm down to one.

I've done two after a period forever, since my underwood days. Most forum software seems to remove the extra space anyway.

Now that 'extra' space looks really odd.

Boy I hope that extra space at the end of this sentence helps the slow readers comprehend.

One.

Ive set 10,000s of thousands of pages of type. never once used 2 spaces. Pre computer and post computer days. I learned to type on a Selectric, and I sucked. Still do 30 years later.

Outdated test using an outdated font with the wrong test subjects.

Im sure the author, and everyone else who is saying "I told you so!" learned to type on some sort of a typewriter, as opposed to a 20 year old computer.

I'm with you. But in my science circles, this issue has a lot of passion behind those who insist on two spaces. They judge those who use a single space as untrained and poorly educated, then assuming the results being described are also poorer than those written by someone with 2 spaces. It's absurd.

Exactly, it is the convention for monospaced type like that used by typewriters. For proportional type the usual space after the end of a sentence is an em-space as compared to an en-space between words. However for justified type those spaces are the minimum, and vary as needed. The wider space provided by the em-space serves the same purpose as the double space for fixed width type.

"the test subjects read paragraphs in Courier New, a fixed-width font"

Two space for fixed-width is not the debate. This test proves nothing new.

Not only that, but running a multivariate test with 60 subjects is not enough.

I like the affectation of a single space on either side of punctuation.

Makes me laugh, along with multiple exclamation points.

I’ve had to do this all the time. It is no problem at all. Just run find and replace in Indesign and it does your whole document in seconds. Then run it again until it doesn’t find anymore.

Typing two spaces when using a proportional font makes as much sense as using a stirrup to mount an automobile.

Two spaces in typesetting will mess up justification, so always only one space. However, it doesn't matter one whit in something like an email or forum post. Two spaces is better with fixed-width typefaces, but again, in a typical message or post it is totally irrelevant, use whichever you prefer. I am amazed at how much some folks care about this. The reason two spaces was originally the norm is that all typewriter fonts are monospaced. One space was always the normal for professional publishing and became the norm on PCs when they moved to word processing with proportional fonts.

I do three spaces...just to piss the space-nazis off.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I learned on a TRS-80 Model I, 40 years ago. That sucker didn't even have lower-case. Two spaces for me is just automatic, I don't think I could stop if I tried.
