Not a great song imo, but just reading your post brings me right back to my 12yo-radio listening self in 1973. I'm sure I could recite the whole song even though I haven't heard it in probably close to 40 years.

I saw him play this as part of a three song acoustic/solo aside during one of his shows at the Vic theatre in chicago quite a while back..pretty amazing..not a dry eye in the house. looking around the room and folks were stunned. I love the range in his voice..falsetto down to his signature and powerful deeper tone..

I guess he's the kind of performer you either love or don't. Personally I'm with hal; I don't.

Of his songs, I thought these were better tunes, but neither in any way important in the annals of rock:

Hey, don't worry about it! There's lots of great music out there. It was right about 1973 that I was wandering off into 'progressive rock' and was feeling smug about it - feeling that mere pop was beneath me. Then disco took over and I turned the radio switch to FM and it stayed there. No more pop for me.

I've mellowed a bit in old age - I've come to appreciate some of the stuff I dismissed back then, but not all of it.

I looked up the song and couldn't find it on any billboard list of top hits. Wiki says it was released in 73, google says 72, but it's not on the bb top 100 for either year as listed on wiki. (??) Something is wrong there - that was a HUGE hit...

It was released twice actually..#5 Billboard hot pop 100 in 1973..BUT..this song remained on regular rotation for many years after it's release in 197..it really was a staple of the 70's for a lot of stations..they kept it nearby/

Im from the same zone..but i ranged in my tastes..was deep in Beatles, Floyd, Roxy, Patti, Bows, Lou, etc..but also i liked to dance and disco represented a ton of fun and girls in that regard.

I dove into early punk and followed that ethic..well..until now. I love it all and I love the phenomenon of POP culture..things that are made that strike a note with HUGE numbers of people..it's interesting to me..but i have my corners..and through all of this Is Zappa since i was old enough to sneak a smoke..Also,..Roxy, Reed, Bowie, Heads, much 'punk'..

The song always had resonance to in it's hook..still does.

Saw Todd Rundgren's Utopia at Bucknell University in the mid 70's. Great show - he had and an arsenal of synthesizers which was impressive for the time period. I see they are touring again.

Todd and his band Utopia did a great Beatles parody album, Deface the Music.

Well, okay, more of an homage than a ripoff. A couple of my favorite songs of all time are on that album!

They did the whole range, from early Beatles to Sgt. Pepper's to White Album style.
Here's one from the beginning of the album: fun 60s-era "American Invasion".

He was one of my older sister's friends back in Philadelphia during the sixties. He was in a band called Woody's Truck Stop. My sister lost touch with him when he left Philly. I only met him once while she still knew him, when the band stopped in on their way to Atlantic City (my family lived in NJ). and pretty much all I remember is that he looked a lot like my cousin Diane but he had longer hair.

Awesome tales and great posters. Saw him at a one man show in Indianapolis at a giant dance club. The entire show had a reel to reel back up. Very interesting entertainer as was his record label Brearsville.
