ibook hard drive swap-- tackle tonight?

I just reviewed all the steps and I can't even believe I've done this before.
How can I determine whether I'm mentally and emotionally up to the task?

Depending on your time zone you may want to wait, the last one I did took just over 2 hours.

Ahh come on. I did a 14" iBook in 35 minutes start to finish this AM.

Of course, that was one of the few times everything came apart just perfect.

And it's 64 screws. Yes, 64. And you DO have to put them all back in the right holes. No cheating!

If you haven't done it before, give yourself three uninterrupted hours, and a place where you can safely let all the pieces sit out for a day or two if you do get interrupted or run into a glitch.

Be sure you have a printout of the teardown instructions. I found it helpful to have another computer with the teardown pdf--easier to see, for whatever reason.

The biggest help was to make a big loop of masking tape, sticky side out, and put the screws, etc. onto it in order. I also drew lines on it with a Sharpie, to distinguish between phases of the work.

Good luck. It's very doable, and it is a lot of detail.

And the rest of the times became AS IS BROKEN iBOOK FOR PARTS eBay listings?

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

That's smart advice. I'd add, begin before dinner and before any alcoholic beverage.

You just have to be organized. It took me little less than an hour. I printed out the instructions and taped the screws to the pages as I took them out. It is just a slow process with all the little screws but it is doable.

I will advise this - if it's a G4 iBook. the connector in the top left corner of the motherboard that is attached to the top cover, that goes to the power switch- I've said it before and I'll say it iagain. Crappy design, no room to get the cover off without tensioning the wire, and the solder is REALLY WEAK on the logic board. I've had to repair half a dozen of those now. And yes, every one from me taking it apart, because it breaks loose when you remove the cover.

Bad Apple!

Use caution. And proceed at your own risk. smiling smiley
