Why two firewire 800 ports???
Posted by: rocketiz

I was looking to buy a firewire enclosure and noticed one
on sale at OWC:

"OWC Mercury Elite Pro FireWire 800/400 + USB 2.0/1.1 Combo Case Kit:"
[eshop.macsales.com]

I noticed that it has two firewire 800 ports. Considering my laptop
(AL1.67) only has 1 port, I naively ask :why is this useful??

Thanks

It's an extra port you can attach another device to in case you need it.

Like if your laptop only had one port : -)

I get it -I think- I don't use up the only FW800 port that I have.

Correct - You can daisy chain FW (400 or 800) so if you have several devices you have ports.

Example - If you had an external FW drive and a card reader you could plug the card reader
into the extra port on the external drive so you don't have to juggle things

IIRC you can daisy chain 27 or so devices on FW

and just one more thing ....

having a second port on the case is a good back up in case one goes bad.

I have had a cheap FW400 case where one port went bad and the other still worked.
Probably as good of chance the whole board would go bad - but you never know.

Another example, our 400MHz Pismo has two FW ports. One has gone dead; the other one still works

Thanks for your responses. I could also use the
USB and FW400 ports of the same enclosure, not only as backup, but as
additional ports.

Now you get the picture . . . go fourth and multiply!
