AT&T Fiber

Last week got an email that AT&T Fiber is available in my Area. A Week later, I'm switching from 25/5 Copper + DirecTV to 300/300 + uVerseTV, saving about $40 a month!

Boy would I love to have those upload speeds. Backing up to my new offsite service is taking literally months now (admittedly, I have way too many duplicate files)

Did you purchase an optical modem or was that provided? Also, who runs the new optical cable inside of the house? ATT as part of the installation? Or do you or the contractor of choice run the inside cable?

The Modem is part of the service (rental is built in to the price). The Installer (wearing and ATT Shirt, driving an ATT Truck) ran fiber form the lines to a box on my house, then into my house from the box.

Here's a bonus. I called DirecTV to cancel that service. The rep advised me to just take all the boxes to my local UPS store, tell them it was going back to DirecTV. They will print a label with my account number and pack it all up!

I really got to say I'm pretty happy with ATT/DirecTV customer service. In more than two years of service, I've had two outages, one of which required a service call, on New Years Day. I really can't complain.

I am another one that would love to switch, but AT&T's map to confirm coverage of U-verse TV is useless to find coverage. It only seems to give a positive result if you already know there is service to an address.

Doesn't AT&T own DirecTV now. Do they still offer uVerse. What is the difference.

I'm happy with it. Price is reasonable, and it's much, much more reliable than Crapcast. I think we've had two outages in two years. Comcast dropped out at lest once a month.

Can you give us some idea of the monthly price (including taxes/fees/etc)?

ATT DOES own DirecTV, and also offer uVerse TV where fiber is available. The Best thing about DirecTV was NFL Sunday Ticket! I rarely had weather related issues.

uVerse has a different channel lineup, but roughly comparable to local Cable. I do wish Apple would just buy DirecTV for the Programming (especially the NFL Ticket), then spin off (get it smiley-music039)the Satellite business

100 Mbps is $50/month, but that's bundled with Uverse TV service, so YMMV.

As mentioned by Rolando, uVerse is still offered, but not everywhere. Since July 2015 AT&T does own DirecTV and launched DirecTV Now in 2016, they are separate services and don't have the all of the same channels available the last time I checked.

Main differences between DirecTV Now and uVerse are the channel lineups and how they are provided. There is a fair amount of overlap to the channel lineups, but AT&T is having to negotiate new agreements with providers to offer channels for DirecTV Now.

uVerse is only offered where AT&T has fiber service, otherwise their website will bounce you to DirecTV Now offers. It requires use of their set top box. If you have uVerse service, there are apps to allow watching streaming video on smart phones and tablets.

DirecTV Now is strictly streaming and uses apps on smart phones, tablets and devices like the Apple TV. It can be used with any ISP as long as you have sufficient bandwidth. I find it works okay over my DSL connection which is up to 5.5-6 mbps as long as other large downloads or uploads are not happening. My son can usually stream video at the same time to his computer as long as he sticks to 720p.

5Mbps up. 5 stinkin' Mbps up. Is that too much to ask?

I really don't want to go cable. Took a look at att and no fiber for me! $72/mo gets me phone and Internet, up to 75Mbps, and 1T data. 1 stinkin' T! How can I live on 1T?!

Even worse, when I give up my grandfathered Unlimited iPhone plan, entry level is only 1G/month, then they throttle to 128k. Had I acted sooner, it would have been 3G for the same money.

Have you called and compared what the new "Unlimited Plus" will cost? It ended up saving me about $20/m for five lines (at the time).

I haven't called.

There probably isn't any use. I pay $66 ($6 modem rental that I'll return) for my 20/1 Sonic- phone and unlimited internet. I don't really want to pay much more.

Maybe I'll call. The sticker shock may make me appreciate what I got.
