100% DEET.
Screw that 5% stuff.

Don't get it in your eyes.

I've always used 100% DEET, sparingly when really needed, but found this NPR piece interesting:

"A Guide To Mosquito Repellents, From DEET To ... Gin And Tonic?"

I have a designated DEET hat.

Are mosquitos different this year than 20 years prior?
What have you been doing before? And has that not been successful?

Aw, help the poor little migrant mosquitoes out. They want for so little.

The classic Wisconsin solution is beer. Lots and lots of beer. After they bite, the poor little bastiches are too drunk to fly.

If you want less-toxic solutions:

1) UV-based mosquito traps, such as a Dynatrap, or the ones that actually zap them. These work quite well.

2) For personal protection, make a mix of apple cider vinegar, witch hazel or rubbing alcohol, and a few drops of eucalyptus, lemon eucalyptus, or lemongrass essential oil. Not only does this repel the mosquitos, but it smells really good. [www.youtube.com]

CO2 based (propane) traps work better than other devices, but they're expensive. Still, if you want to clear an area around your home, that's the best way to go.

Otherwise... plant lots of lemongrass and rosemary around your windows and crack some stems every few days to release the bug-repelling oil/sap.

I agree, the zappers work great.

Still looking for that iPhone app that creates a bug proof force field around one's self.

In the meantime, it's Deep Woods Off for me. I had to use quite a bit last night during the local fireworks show. Damn bloodsuckers were thick!

If you're going to be in one place and near an electric outlet, just run a fan pointing to where you are sitting. Run it on the middle speed, not too fast.
I know, you're laughing. So was I before I tried it. It really works. The little buggers can't fly into the breeze from the fan and can't get anywhere near you. Mosquitos make a beeline for my wife whenever she steps outside. She was highly skeptical of this solution. However, now she can sit on our back deck for hours without getting bitten.

Picaridin is just as effective as deet but not so nasty.
The CO2 based traps work really well at drawing in all the mosquitos from the neighborhood. I had two ... waste of money.

I have a couple of these Thermacell units that I use for backpacking and camping. [www.amazon.com]

At times they are incredibly effective. Once backpacking in the sierra, we were cooking/eating in a swarm of mosquitos. I set two of these up on either side of our group and it literally created a mosquito free bubble for about a 15' radius. If you walked out of the range you got eaten alive, but inside totally mosquito free. There was zero wind and conditions were perfect for these.

Other times they are less effective, primarily when there is a mild breeze that is not strong enough to dissuade the mosquitos.

All of their products are based on the same system. They have a new unit I am going to get for use on the deck at home as well as car camping: [www.amazon.com]
This one uses standard camping butane canisters rather than the small custom canisters that the smaller units use.

How about a squadron of super intelligent bats that you have bent to your will, and trained to do your bidding?

Works for me every summer when we go camping. They get their own tent, so they don't crap on my while they rest.

Is this for your backyard? You have to get rid of EVERY POOL OF STANDING WATER.

Other sources can be nearby greenery (like a hedge). If so, you should spray.

If this is camping, DEET plus long sleeves and pants.

For your own porch or deck or yard, agree smiley with what richolin said about the fan. Just ask generations of southern families. A fan next to the door will also keep them from entering your house (my aunts and grandparents always had this).

Of course, getting rid of standing water is a given. However, there's no way to eliminate it all from areas not under your control, and even in your own yard in the rainy season. I don't believe in spraying poison all around a yard — we want to encourage our batty friends to eat up!

actually you can use the pool of standing water to control mosquitos. There is a particular substance that you can put in this pool of standing water, and mosquito will breed in there but the larva will not leave. I forgot what it is called, I believe I heard about it on NPR and I asked about it here a few years ago. I may have seen it for sale on Amazon. I didn't try it but when I move I will definitely try at the new house.

From what I recall, that substance is claimed to be safe for pets humans yet not good at all for mosquitos.
