Is it possible to have multiple versions of Word on ones Mac?

Any MacResourcers have multiple versions of Word on your single Mac?

I barely ever use it, but I have a writer friend who's "afraid" of upgrading from some old pre-2011 version of Word, and I want to suggest to him that he could keep that old codger and simply have a newer version of Word to play with, too. Just like Pages or Keynote, etc.

But this is Microsoft we're dealing with, so I wanted to check and see if anyone has successfully done this.

Thank you.

I've done it in the past with no problems. The only issue is if you save an old file in the new version, you may not be able to open it again in the older version. You also have to be careful and not just double click on a file. Open from within the version you want to use.

Perfect. All I needed to hear. Thank you, cyclemax, I appreciate this.

I skipped Office 2011 and so I'm not running multiple version now.

But, yes, I've often had overlapping versions both at the same time. Had 2004 and 2008 running for a time.

But, because this is for someone else and not for you...
Is he having trouble? What do you hope to solve by suggesting he stir things up?

Certainly there is no reason to be "afraid" of the upgrade.
But, there are always changes.

I have people who are constantly screwing things up – lord knows how - and blaming it on the autosave feature.

Unless you are really familiar with his workflow and know exactly what you are helping him solve... I'd stay out of it.

That's just me. YMMV.

I hear you, bik. And I'm careful about "helping' anyone with any Mac thing these days.

Yes, and both of them periodically forget that they're registered legal copies. It's very annoying. I've given up and switched to LibreOffice.

5.1 and 6 seemed to coexist well enough.

Yes, and there can be some good reasons for doing this. For example, some older versions of documents containing editable equations aren't editable in newer versions of Word. However, as time goes on, these "legacy" equations are fewer and farther between. Still, having access to an Office '04 or '08 version is sometimes the only way to resurrect and modernize an older file.

Worst case scenario, you could run one of the versions in a VM.

While it does't always work, I've used the Open with... dialog (Click and hold, then press the Option key) for files that I don't want to open with a newer version of an app.

This might prevent one from opening an old file in a later app where editing, or saving to the older application might be a problem, as cyclmax mentions.
