Kids bought an older postwar saltbox house with aluminum siding, and a detached one car garage that’s been painted for 50 years at least. Not insulated, just studs on the inside, wood clapboard is in decent shape, except for peeling paint, which seems to me would be an enormous job to strip. They’ve gotten a quote of $3000 from a painter to strip and repaint. They’re probably not going to stay there forever.

Tell me why not to just put vinyl/steel/aluminum siding right over the clapboard and be done with it?

Our previous house had siding over cedar shingles. We tore the siding off .Underneath were beautiful aged hard cedar shingles. Unfortunately to fit the siding they cut a lot of the architectural details from window/door trim and it was a bit of working restoring some of that. Often existing siding is removed to fit a modern breathing membrane and maybe insulation prior to installing the new siding.

I put vinyl over peeling wood siding on my previous house. I put a later of rigid foam, then the new siding. The foam gave insulation as well as a smooth surface for the next later of siding. 20 years later the house still looks good. I had to build out some of the trim (not a lot) to keep it from receding. This was wood, though, perhaps aluminum has other considerations.

While was at it, I had the walls blown with cellulose; the new siding covered the holes.

That said, tear-off is not that bad an idea; it's work, but not technically difficult. Grab a flat crowbar and have at it. You'll get a few bucks for the aluminum.

Just to be clear, there is aluminum siding on the house, which is fine and staying. The issue is the detached one car garage, which has (and needs) no insulation, and has wood clapboard existing siding with 50 coats of peeling paint. Can I just go over this existing siding with aluminum or vinyl siding?

My parent's had a asbestos siding. The family, including 7 year old me, helped manually remove it in the 70s. They had foam backed aluminum siding on there since. It's still there.

Aluminum is great. It resists corrosion, doesn't get brittle from Extreme sun (in Texas). I'm told vinyl can get brittle from extreme cold as well.

I guess the worst thing about aluminum siding is the look. If you don't like it, or buyers don't, then it could impact resale.

Yes, but one issue on an existing layer is getting the new layer to lie flat. There is usually some sort of membrane put down first which can serve a number of purposes beyond providing a flat(ter) mounting surface.
Then there is the trim and where/how roof drip edges meet .
Sometimes there is enough prep work needed that's it is less time consuming to just rip the existing surface off and start new.

To get it to lie flat over existing siding, I have seen thin foam that comes in folded sheets. The insulation is provides is minimal, it's main function is to smooth surface. Or you can run vertical furring strips.

Don’t do it. The previous owners of our house did just that. They used wooden slats to keep it all level. The problem is that the old wood is still rotting under it and the insulation value sucks because there are holes and cracks everywhere. Wasps especially like to hide in all the gaps this method leaves.

When we had vinyl siding put on last winter, the contractor considered installing it over the existing cedar panel siding. But they decided to strip off the panels because they were in poor shape. Overall, I think it was a cleaner solution and allowed them to do a better job installing the vapor barrier. On the down side, I’ll be picking up old nails from the ground around the house for years.

I’m not sure if an unheated garage needs a vapor barrier or not.
