Good Portable Radio for Weak FM Signal Reception?

I need something better than my aging Panasonic and Sony boomboxes. Any suggestions? Multiple other dials, like short-wave and weather, would be plusses, and of course low cost.

An external antenna is always the cheapest way to improve FM reception. A roof mounted antenna is best, even if it's designed for VHF TV stations. However, a TV "rabbit ear" antenna might get the job done for you.

Pricey, but reputation is good.

Where is this for: inside, back yard, motor home, remote cabin, campsite? Does it need to have good battery life, be rechargable, run off 12 V/USB power, etc.?

Most portable FM radios don't have connections for an external antenna, though lots of table radios do.

What you're looking for is a radio with (preferably) a sensitive FM turner, and/or connections for an external antenna, or a built-in telescoping antenna.

The latter is more common than either of the formers. So a portable multi-band shortwave radio is your best beat.

You might try some of the various Ham radio sites. They might have something appropriate. Otherwise do a search for shortwave radios and hope someone lists the specs that cover FM sensitivity.

Or get an FM radio with telescoping antenna and jerry-rig an external antenna, if that doesn't compromise your use of 'portable'.

I read the reviews of the Sangeans, and others, and decided to order the Crane CCradio-2E. Some Crane reviewers offered comparisons, which were helpful. Others said the company's customer service was exemplary, and indeed a CS representative added comments offering help to those who complained about problems.

So we'll see. I wanted to move fast, so probably spent more than I should have. If it doesn't perform any better than my 30-year-old Panasonic boom boxes (Pannys had better FM tuners than Sony back then), I'll return it and start over. But CCrane has an excellent reputation.

Thanks for the advice,

/Mr Lynn

The better call, I think.

I don't know anything about the Crane, but I've had a couple of Sangean products, and the execution and performance were not very good.

Your CC2BE looks to be a nice bit of kit.

Two particular features I like are the replaceable telescoping antenna and the external AM Antenna and Ground (Earth) connections. It has a dual ferrite core internal antenna as well.

IF you need greater FM signal strength and you're not too picky about aesthetics, you could run run a wire from the GND connector to a good ground. The screw holding the faceplate onto a metal outlet box is good. Then run another wire from the GND connection on the radio to the FM antenna, winding a few turns around it and making a 'rabbit ear' out of it. It doesn't always work but sometimes it'll improve you reception.

The GE Super Radio. You can probably find one at a yard sale or buy one on eBay. Seriously, a great radio for pulling in distant stations for very cheap money.

I have one of those. The AM section is pretty decent on them.
