At the age of 14 my friend and I visited the 1966 Earls Court Motor Show where for a few minutes I sat in what was to me at the time the most fabulous car I had ever seen. It was new at that show so I hadn't even seen a picture before. I told my friend that one day I would have one. It took until about 1993 but finally I managed it and of all the cars I have ever owned that was the one that gave me the most grins per mile and also the least miles per gallon. I owned it for about five years and only sold it because we were building our new house and for quite a while I would have nowhere to protect it. There have been many regrets over the years but it was probably for the best and for a few short years I drove my dream car.

For those of you who may remember some of my cars I have mentioned here, no, it wasn't a Maserati. I just searched the interwebs and an old photo of my car is still there, a bit low res but you might just make out my young teenage daughter who loved going to the classic car shows with her Dad. Mine was the later 1973 model with the even bigger engine.

1972 Dodge Coronet Custom-

(Mine was beige with a black interior and in nowhere near that good a shape)

Ran great, drove great, and apparently I'm fairly close to the mockup dummies that Chrysler used in the design process because all the controls fell easily to hand without me having to lean over too far yet nothing intruded on my personal space while driving. If I ever become obscenely rich, I'll buy another one in "cream puff" condition.

Got it to learn to drive stick.

Got rid of it 15 years later because no one else in my family cared to learn.

pRICE,

A 1996 Jeep Cherokee. Not the Grand Cherokee. The regular Cherokee. Overall, my favorite vehicle. I've owned others that I still adore but not on the same level as that little ol' Jeep. Size was great. Utility was great. Lots o' power. Great in crappytacular weather including snow, rain, ice, you name it. Surprisingly comfortable. My only complaint was gas mileage. It sucked. It's too bad, the Jeep Patriot, the closest thing Jeep offered as a replacement, was horrible.

1967 MGB. Supposed to be British Racing Green like the picture, but I bought it in Nebraska and the previous owner had repainted it in John Deere green.

The one I actually look back most fondly on is the tin top 1986 Suzuki Samurai. Forget about all of that faked Consumer Reports stuff about rollovers. Used it as a winter commuter for three years and it was a beast in the snow. It also could go just about anywhere due to the narrow width and short wheelbase.

Sold it only because the backseat was really inconvenient for a car seat once we had a kid...

'66 VW

It was ten years old when this was taken. I was the second owner and I drove it for thirty years. When I sold it in 2006, it was shipped to Alaska where a guy had a $10K motor to put in it.

in 1984, my first car was a '75 Datsun 280Z 4-speed.. It was quick and handled great. I did a color change from white to DuPont Imron Metallic Black. If you have never done a full takedown and color change - it is a very interesting experience. I had an awesome Alpine stereo cassette with custom built speaker enclosure for my MTX 6X9s! I had a lot of great fun in that car & also became a man in that car. I saw it several times for the next 10 years. Still had the same gold lace BBS style wheels I put on it. It finally lost its fight with rust and was put to a peaceful rest. I wish I knew how to post a pick. It was a great one!

I took this car's entire rear suspension to school piece by piece on a schoolbus and sandblasted and painted it all. My mom and dad drove it across the country for the Corvair Club national convention in Portland OR a few years ago. They stopped by Yakima and my dad handed me the keys. I have some great memories of driving this car around in high school and doing things that I probably shouldn't have been doing. Still looks good even after all these years.

1972 BMW 2002,,Manual Trans

wicked and super fun little car bought off of a neighbor of my parents for peanuts..old dude..wanted me to have it...easy to work on, put a ton of miles on it in my late teens and twenties..swapped in a crate motor after some years..piece of cake.

This car was such a blast to drive..owned it into the late 80's and then loaned it to a friend who needed to run an important errand one day while his car was in the shop.

....He totalled it getting onto the expressway on a left hand entrance ramp..tore off basically the whole right side of the car..he was ok but my car was not..

That was the end of my love affair with cars..now i get what rolls and carries my tools and equipment and drive them to dust.

Sorry, but I have two:

1977 VR Rabbit -- My first car and a blast to drive, for what it was. Loved the sunroof. This is the car in which I first ventured out into the world on my own. I put 105K miles on that car in three years and drove it until it dropped.

2010 Infiniti G37 -- Luxurious, grin-inducing acceleration and speed. Need I say more?

It is what it is.

I guess it would have to be my '84 Chevy Camaro. It was the first new car I ever ordered with all the options I wanted. I did buy an '81 Chevy Citation new off the lot a few years prior, so the Camaro wasn't my first brand new car.

I loved that Camaro. I think I washed and vacuumed that thing twice a week. Silver, black interior with T-Tops and all the stuff that are now standard equipment on most new vehicles now.

I got to drive a 1982 or a 1983 Porsche 911SC for a few weeks before I drove it from Hermosa Beach, CA to Charlotte, NC. I did take a detour along the way and drove up Hwy 243 to Idyllwild, what a fun drive!

This was the first car that I ever owned.

I drove it until it rusted out at 113K

This is impossible for me to answer since I've had a few favorites. The two I wish I still owned were a '78 VW Bus Westfalia and the '59 356 Porsche Cabriolet in the photo. Sold the bus in 1990 to buy a VW Vanagon camper that had heat and the 356 had to go in 1971 since I couldn't carry my art supplies.

1965 Austin Healey Sprite, bought it in 1972. Sold it to my brother and he recently returned it to me (in pieces). About two months away from getting it back on the road. I've had a bunch of much more powerful sports cars but this one was by far the most fun to drive (though a bit too small and noisy for extended freeway driving). The car feels like an extension of your body. The steering is so responsive you just need to twitch a little bit to change direction.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

It started life as a 500 model, so probably not a Spyder. My dad rebuilt the engine. He's a Corvair whisperer. The interior is pretty sparse. It has no factory radio (it's blanked out) and I'm told originally the door panels were cardboard, so you get the idea. It was the poor man's model. It has a 4 carb setup that I believe is 110HP. My dad has a 140 turbo in our basement.

My favorite was.actually a 1978 Ford Bronco XLT, a car/truck that was made so well that they stopped making them like that after only two model years. It also drove extremely well for such a large vehicle, and was fun to drive. It had all of the typical problems if that era, like sticking transfer case, rusting bumpers, but it was a serious tank. Oh, it only got 8mpg around town, so it had to go, as that's where I do most of my driving. A dinosaur that would be missed.

1981 Chevy Citation X-11.
It was Chevy's attempted image builder for the Citation line. Think of it as what the Z28 is to the Camaro.
Came from the factory with a fiberglass hood with functional hood air scoop, extra horsepower, of course, It even had 5 spoke aluminum mag wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT tires, the Camaro didn't even have those tires yet! Also did NOT have a muffler, only a spark arrestor, and the engine mods for more HP also allowed for a 7,000 RPM Redline. Noticed in 1982, that went back to 6,500.
I had some race car driver and mechanic friends back then, so they removed the tape striping Chevy used and had their car painter re-do all with real paint, striping and lettering. Boy that car was sharp., and fast!

Found out after the fact, (I"m OK with this, as they are pro drivers), that when the car was in the shop for the paint, my driver friend took the car out for a "little test" as he called it. After he drove it, he said the me, "That car has some balls!"

That was great to hear, coming from a pro.

Unfortunately, mortgage came, kids happened, mini vans appeared in my yard, so I reluctantly sold it.

Would have loved to store it for fun times, but...

Dave

I've had a bunch of great, fun cars: '67 Sunbeam Tiger (Ford V-8), '68 BMW 1602, '79 Mazda RX-7 (drove it for 22 years), '70 Mercedes 300SEL-6.3, '61 GMC Suburban and have driven friend's cars: '80's 911 and '67 427'Vette tri-power. My favorite is the car I drive today when its not raining: a 2006 Corvette convertible in Monterey Red, delivered new at the Corvette Museum (down the road from the factory.

Honestly the 1981 Fiat Spyder 2000 Turbo was the most dang fun to drive. When it worked, which was like 50% of the time. Once I got used to the weird "Italian Driving Position". When that turbo spooled up.... sounded like a jet engine and kicked you in the butt with a burst of power. I drove that car faster than any car I've driven in to date, and ran from the police SO many times. Never got a ticket, but I deserved dozens of them.

Looked exactly like this one.

Wow. I never saw one that stripped down. I perused all the literature and sales brochures when my dad was ready to pull the trigger on a '65 110 HP Monza IIRC, which had two carbs. I was about 16, so I tried to talk him into a 140 HP four-carb model or the turbo, but no joy. My brother, on the other hand, had just come into some money, so he sprung for a yellow '65 Turbo. 180 HP. That thing screamed.

I don’t think the year matters a whole lot, but I also had a ‘96. Most fun car I’ve owned. Mine was rusting out all over the floor. I was looking into replacing the floor pans and fixing it up but I wrecked it. I’d like to get another someday. It even did me alright in the accident. Rolled it off the interstate, not a scratch on me.

Volvo P122S, dark green, cost $1,000 with >100,000 miles. It drove like a truck, felt as solid as a little tank, and I adored it. Would have loved a P1800, though!

Most fun and most memorable car was probably the 1987 Firebird GTA.
