I have a Blade coffee grinder (Braun, 20 year old) which works fine but I understand Burr coffee grinders are better since you get a more consistent size.


I bought a this one but since it is manual I do not use it often enough, and wife refuses to use it. I found the excuse to get an electrical one.

I am thinking about a Capresso, and I see the have conical and disk models.

Based on the price, the conical are more expensive so I would think they are better, but what do I know? Nothing.

So: Disk or Conical?

Capresso or some other brand? let's say $200 is not an issue.

For home use conical might be a better choice because the flat design tends to retain fresh grounds which in a high use environment really would not be an issue. Likely more so with fine grinds.
Shaking or slapping the grinder probably knocks them off but who wants to do that all the time.

Either way they supposedly are pretty much equals when it comes to results.

You'd be better off pulsing your old blade grinder, rather than holding til "done". 5 or 10 1 sec pulses do a good job.

If you're gonna get a burr electric I'd go with Baratza. I have a Virtuoso that I quite like and is easy to clean. I'm sure their more reasonable Encore is every bit as good, but didn't exist when I bough this.

One can also occasionally find a factory refurbed Baratza, which mine was. It was $149 about 7 years ago. I use it every day. Still original burr and still consistent.

Baratza coffee grinder owner here. Love it.
One minor little nit-pick. But all-in-all, it's a great dependable grinder.

My (conical) burr grinder broke a year ago and I have not replaced it yet. In the meantime I've been using a blade grinder and I must say that I dint notice s huge difference. It's made laying down the $100 or so for a new grinder a little tough.

Depends on what you want to drink and what you want to spend.

In general, conical burr grinders are less expensive and grind somewhat less consistently. Fine for French press or pour-over, less desirable if you're into espresso.

For espresso, grinders have an outsized impact on the final result: spend as much as you can afford. (I have a Mazzer, and have never cared for Baratza grinders, but à chacun son goût.)

I always pulse my Braun blade grinder. It works pretty well.

Barely used, the manual espresso maker we had broke and we replaced it with a more automatic one that also grinds beans, rendering it obsolete. It's taking up space in the basement so we'd love to get rid of it cheap. Let me know if you're interested.

.....also Starbucks will grind their bagged coffee for free......buy a bag of Starbucks coffee and when it is empty refill with other brand coffee (or get an empty one from a 'friend') and then take to Starbucks to grind for free [ read about this in another forum ]......

Breville burr grinder. Actually, I was able to upgrade my previous Breville grinder with their newest model. The new one allows more control of the grind size than the previous model.
Important when making espresso in a quality machine.

There is a large difference between a fresh grind and one that was ground 2 days ago. Yes, huge difference in smell and taste. A bag will last us about a week, so the fresh ground flavor would be gone by Tuesday.

....but it keeps you grounded.....

Absolutely correct! Once ground the beans lose their freshness very quickly, so ideally the beans are stored in an airtight container and only the amount needed for your espresso is ground when you are going to brew immediately.

I learned what I know from coffee roaster friends that sell commercially.
The couple were in the commodities trading. The other guy was the roaster and buyer for Fairway here in NY. I trust and have experienced the diff in what they have learned me. I grind fresh for every cup.
The cat may think I'm crazy, but he doesn't drink coffee and he likes the taste of mouse. I can't get by the smell.
