Missing from MWSF: New OS, iApp updates, computer updates?
Posted by: blusubaru

Now that the big cheese has spoken, I'm left wondering where the rest of the updates are. Did I miss something? Wasn't the new OS supposed to be released? The new iChat and rumored video cams aren't ready yet? What about much needed updates to iWeb and the rest of iLife and iWork suites? CS3? And I find it hard to believe that in all the hoop-lah of iTv and iPhone that there were no computer upgrades, not just unlocking what's already there. No offense to Larry and the crew on their ModBook.

My take on this is Apple wants to show the world that it is not just about computers. While other companies talk digital lifestyle, Apple is actually taking us there.

There's a good chance there will be a special event to announce the upcoming release of 10.5. That would also be an opportune time to announce new/updated hardware.

There is also the WWDC coming up later this year. Apple might be waiting to announce hardware then.

Don't they just upgrade the computers as a matter of course these days? I don't think they announce everything at shows these days, they just do it. For example, they upgraded the Macbooks to the Core 2 Duo processors without any special hoopla. The days of having to act like a simple computer update was a major show-stopping moment are thankfully gone.

Clearly Apple wanted the media to come away with ONE thing on their mind: the iPhone. Any other major announcements would have just cluttered the story.

But, given how the iPhone really isn't about Mac, and that Apple Computer is no more meaning Apple is not just about the Mac, and it strives to make multi-platform compatible products, shouldn't MacWorld now be changed to AppleWorld? Or maybe Apple should take it's consumer products to CES and leave MacWorld to Macs?

The Keynote wasn't really for us - the Mac computer users - it was for the press who was more than happy to learn about new consumer electronics products... Computers are CE too.... We have a slightly different slant on the keynote due to the more specific expectations.

Not very crazy in the expectations... I mean it is Macworld.

Which was really even more interesting for them to have chosen the computer show to announce the eliminatation of 'Computer' from their name too.

On the bright side.... in quasi..... the only 'New' Mac Computer at the show was the ModBook we got to introduce. smiling smiley

I mentioned this before: I am pretty sure that the name Macworld is based on the name of the magazine, which is owned by IDG who puts on the Expo. So the name is about the branding of the magazine, not the content of the Expo. You will have to take it up with IDG, not Apple. But you would be asking IDG to give up the most newsworthy, press-attention-getting part of their Expo, so don't hold your breath.

At work we were speculating that Apple may have an announcement later this week about other upgrades. One of my co-workers mentioned that Apple did that at a previous NAB convention.

its already been said that 10.5 will be in the spring, not now

CS3 -- thats Adobe, not Apple -- has also said "later"

ilife 07 was certainly expected, as was core 2 duo minis and iSight cameras -- but they could be announced anytime

I've thought the same thing.
Apple could/should be at CES.

But I doubt they'ed get the focus and attention they're used to.

Nice to have your own venue, regardless company product release.

Can we have Macworld/Boston back, now ? :-)

Edit: these shows (Macworld, boatshows, etc) are fairly large revenue pumps, when the public shows up and opens their wallets (even when it's 6 months after the show).

I thought we were told 1st Qtr for all of the above back at the time of the iTV announcement (except cameras and minis, that's speculation).

Apple does exhibit at CES.

How are they going to convince CES to make Apple the focal point of the show and have Jobs make their Keynote speech every year, giving him a 2 hour showcase for his company that no other exhibitor has?

Are you really suggesting that IDG and Apple completely overhaul a successful symbiotic relationship that yields them PR and media attention just because you found it disconcerting that the Keynote did not involve products that you personally wanted it to?

No, not at all. I was just suprised that the things that seemed most likely to be presented (aside from iTV) were not mentioned at all. After Jobs played up the new OS and new iChat back at the last show, I thought for certain we'd see them.

I think Apple wanted to stay on target with a message for a broad consumer base as opposed to Mac afficionados. I also would bet most of what you wanted to see is going to happen soon, just without the bells and whistles.

No need to get all worked up :-) I understand everything you are saying, even before you said it. All I'm saying is if you go to the Detroit Auto Show you don't go to see Sharp's new 108" LCD; you don't go to the BMW car pavilion to see BMW motorcycles.

If Apple is going refocus itself as a general consumer electronics company where products no longer rotate around "Mac as hub" philosophy then it should go to CES to announce platform neutral products, and reserve the MW Keynote to Macs and "State of Mac."

As for getting attention, there is no guarantee either at MW or CES. The media didn't pay much attention to MWs when all Apple was doing was pumping out boring Performas models every other week. It's product that matters.

As long as Apple comes out with innovative product the media and consumers will hang on Job's every word no matter where he makes his announcements be it MW, CES, an Apple Event, etc. No decent product and the media will stop coming to MW and probably ignore Apple at CES and elsewhere too. Moreover, Keynoting at both MW and CES illustrates to the media that Apple really is more than Mac now.

Yesterday I heard on the NBC news, regarding the iPhone, that Apple was NOT an exhibitor at CES.

Next year, it's gonna be AE08, Apple Expo 2008. They'll drop the Mac name. Maybe even Macworld magazine will change their name. And I bet the guys who just went from MacAddict to Mac|Life are thinking they changed their name too soon, and should have gone with Apple|Life.

A good overview on what was missing, via (sill currently called) Macworld:

And I should add, I have no complaints with Apple's forays beyond the Mac. Keep the Halo Effect in mind; there's no such thing as bad press, eh? I'm having dyed-in-the-wool Windows users coming to me for advice on which Mac they should get. I "sold" four MacBooks in December; the month before, three (okay, one was an iMac).

The switch to Intel chips was a very good thing (people who never would have considered a Mac are looking at (and buying) them), and this kind of press will bring more people into the light, as it were.

They are listed on the CES website, I guess it was a mistake?

I'm still uncertain how Apple will convince CES to have Jobs make the Keynote every single year without alienating all the other corporations, but I guess I don't have to worry about it too much since it's unlikely to happen anyhow.

The AppleTV and iPhone both still subscribe to the "Mac as hub" philosophy. Both devices require a computer for significant portions of their functionality. The AppleTV is especially useless without a computer to stream content from. Since you can't download music or video to the iPhone over the air in any way, it's still tied to a computer.
