I've been meaning to ask, is there a way to watch BBC shows using a VPN?
Posted by: GeneL

Back when I first installed a VPN I went to the BBC website and was able to watch several shows that I had never heard of. I really enjoyed these shows.

Recently, when I went back to the BBC website I was able to see the listings for a number of shows that I would like to watch, but I couldn't get past the filter which wanted a license. This was new to me and it was disappointing.

I 'd be willing to pay something just to be able to watch the shows that are enjoyable for me.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Same experience here. BBC blocks VPN connections. Must be some VPNs they haven't sorted out yet.

Wonder if it also blocks UK viewers when they try to connect from abroad.

On a related topic, my brother who lives in Beijing told me this week that his Netflix carries a bunch of things which Netflix in the U.S. does not carry, and he can access it via VPN when he travels. He travels internationally all the time, and has been happy to be able to access Netflix on the road. Until now, I didn't know Netflix was available in China. (*I'll have to check with him - he might have something like a Hong Kong Netflix account.)

Good luck.

You can give Opera Browser a try. It has a "VPN" but I am not sure if it will work for what you are doing.

I do _not_ understand why the BBC doesn't charge a flat, reasonable monthly fee to have access to their content. Unamericanized.

They made some changes a few years ago to prevent this. We used to use a VPN to watch Doctor Who.

BBCAmerica has a lot of BBC content, some that's available on demand I believe.

Re Netflix:

1. Netflix has different content by country, with the U.S. having the largest bank of content.

2. Netflix has, so far, allowed VPN connections to any country, which allows you to "shop" for shows that might not be available in the U.S. But Netflix has said it plans to crack down on this.
There is also a method to connect to Netflix in another country using a "Smart DNS" service.

Don't know, but this might give access to some BBC shows not available in the U.S.

Good luck.

Just tried to play a Dr. Who episode using Opera VPN set to "Europe" and got this "BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues."

I looked into this years ago, and almost remember it. You have to have a VPN situated in the country where you want to stream from, I think.

Acorn on Roku? $5/month, I think they have 30 days free preview. They have some BBC shows.

No Roku, but I do have two Apple TVs that I got as part of a Direct TV Now promotion.
Will an Apple TV work?
BTW, can I get Amazon prime video on an Apple TV?
One thing I noticed when I last used my VPN to look at the BBC website, was that I was asked for my license, at least that's how I seem to remember it.
It would seem that it appeared that I was accepted as being in the UK and if I had access to a license that I could enter, I could have watched the shows that I was looking for.
Can anyone in the UK with a license share it with me?

Yes, Acorn is available on Apple TV. Go to their site and see which shows they have. They now offer one week free preview. Then compare it with BritBox and see which you like better.

Yes, you can get an Amazon Prime app now.

You can also add Acorn TV as a "channel" within Amazon prime.

As mentioned, Acorn has quite a lot of BBC shows not available on BBC America.

Recently finished watching Season 8 of Doc Martin on Acorn, through Prime.

I used my VPN for BBC sites and it worked for awhile, as it has for others.

And then, it didn't.

I don't know how a site knows you're using a VPN other than a range of IPs. Is there something in the connection itself that says 'I'm not the droid you think I am'?

Occasionally, I'll go to a site and it says 'No Proxies Allowed!'

That's almost as annoying as getting the 'No Ad Blockers Allowed' or 'Enable Your Cookies!'.

Or I get shopping/shipping results from other states or countries. So I usually have to decloak.

British TV is taxed so you are not allowed to watch TV if you have not payed your taxes.

Granted, but I wonder if a UK resident can "share" their tax ID. How much do they pay in order to watch TV?

I would be willing to pay someone something(?) in order to use their tax ID.

If I had an ID to use, I would think that it would open up the programming that I want to watch, wouldn't it?

Thoughts?

GeneL – Have you checked whether the shows you're interested in are available through Acorn TV?

As discussed above, there are a couple options for Acorn TV without having to worry about Tax IDs and the like.

GeneL while you might be able to get someone to share there tax ID I don't see it being legal and there is no telling what other service there tax ID is used for.
