The picture is in my memory and mind. Our thoughts and love are with those that suffered such great losses. It is hard to believe even today it happened.

I used to do a yearly 9-11 program each year for Crawford Broadcasting. Each year I'd try to find new ways to remember the events of that day so that it wouldn't become stale. This one from 2013 was probably the one that hit me the hardest. I was able to connect with some folks here on the forums that were in the city that day and talk to them about how they saw things. These were the untold stories and people don't normally hear and they hit me like a ton of bricks.

I'm looking at a classroom full of high school students who were born after that day. It is ancient history to them and they really don't understand the way the adults feel. I can tell them, but I guess you had to live it to truly understand.

Not a whole lot different than our generations view of the USS Arizona (or the USS Maine before that). We know the details in a disconnected way.

There are seminal events for every generation - the "where were you when" - I've lived through two -
JFK assasination and 9-11.

I guess the best way to define them is events that caused a "loss of innocence".

The entering freshman class here at the university where I work is the last which mostly consists of students born before this event. But except for some older undergrads and grad students, most of the student body has no direct knowledge or experience of this.

I would add the Challenger disaster to that list.

I was born after 1963, so the Challenger accident was the first of these for me.

I was stuck in Indianapolis at a tech conference. The event was canceled so all I did was sit and watch tv. There is some sort of weapons depot outside the city and at the time, when we really didn’t know what was happening, there was some fear it might be a target. Scary stuff and I’m sure others have even scarier stories. I eventually got home by train. It was really weird how tension was so high but as the train traveled west everybody started to relax. There wasn’t enough food on the train so people would call ahead to the next town and have food delivered. One car threw a birthday party for a kid and had a cake delivered. My family was really happy to see me. I think my wife was scared being home alone with the kids.

Being on the West Coast and not knowing anyone from NY, the impact was less here. My wife, then fiance were watching TV toghther while getting ready for work. It was somber.

the grounding of all air flight ruined one of my clients. They had their largest conference of the year (it made them 80% of their yearly revenue) in Chicago that next weekend. Of course, everything was cancelled.

They tried again next year, and kept it closer to keep costs down... but its just nevver recovered. They were gone by Jan, 1 year 3 months after 9/11.

Not a whole lot different than our generations view of the USS Arizona (or the USS Maine before that). We know the details in a disconnected way.

But different in a big way, along with the USS Arizona, USS Maine, and Challenger tragedies.

These involved military personnel, former military personnel, and civilians that undertook a mission that potentially dangerous. This in no way minimizes the impact of there loss.

But Sept. 11 involved a deliberate, targeted attack on non-combatants— civilians, without concern for gender or age.

We enter into military service knowing there's a possibility that we won't come back the same way we left, or possibly at all. But it's a choice we make, and the outcome isn't always what is hoped for.

Those souls on Sept. 11 did not make or even have that choice.

The horror went on for weeks.

Months if you lived close by. Relatives in TriBeCa couldn't open the windows for months. They sent pictures of a fine layer of dust that somehow managed to cover just about everything inside their apartment. Incredible.

Living in NYC now and then and having been raised in NYC, September 11, 2001 remains a day I will remember and live with for the rest of my years.

This morning, I hung the flag from the terrace.

I said my silent prayer.

I tried to keep an image in my mind of the several friends and neighbors we lost.

It still matters to me.

Be well.

It was a conspiracy of American separatist white supremacists, actually. But that doesn't have anything to do with what RAMd®d said. Carnos Jax made a legitimate point.

I sometimes feel we forget the Oklahoma City bombing....

True enough.

Not all that surprising, in a couple of ways.

It was an attack by a home-grown terrorist. We don't want to think that's even possible.

McVeigh was captured and executed, which put it out of a lot of people's minds.

The Sept. 11 tragedy dwarfed that of Oklahoma City and overwhelmed the minds of many of us.

I've been to the Oklahoma City memorial. It's one of the most powerful, saddening memorials I've ever seen.

But this is about Sept. 11. If somebody wants to post something on April 19, please feel free.

If you don't, I won't assume that you haven't, then or at any other time, observed some form of personal remembrance.
