I have this 50 ft extension cord to charge the car. Yesterday I noticed the female end got really hot! So I stopped using it, I went to home depot and bought my favourite female part:

replaced it, and now they stay just fine when they hook up. Now they stay cool as ice during copulation.

I now checked the male part at the other end of the cable and now that seems warm, not hot, barely warm but I think I will replace it as a preventive measure (I did check it yesterday immediately after disconnecting the load, and it was cold, but now under load it does feel slightly warm).

The interesting part is that I cut open the old female part, it was one of those molded plugs and I was expecting to find evidence of overheating. When I looked inside it seemed like the contacts were blackened. But once I gut it open and looked at the blades and wires, everything was shiny like it was brand new. Go figure. But the important thing is that the new hooker is now cold.

At 50 feet you're gonna get some voltage drop as well

Curious to know what the cord is rated at and what your car draws when charging?

you were most likely overloading a cord with draw and distance..plus time for the charge...you're making heat

The Volt charges at 110 at either 8 or 12 amps. A 10gauge extension cord works for 8A but at 12A things heat up.

Yeah, molded plugs are often the culprit. Really a good catch on your part !

poorly made sockets or really old ones can get hot, loose, arc, turn black and just keep getting worse. Some tarnishing with age doesn't help.
Smart to replace them as soon as they start becoming problematic.

Especially with devices that draw quite a bit of current.

For whatever the reason. the contacts were not making full use of their surface area. Less contact means more resistance.

With current draw being the same, things heat up. The plug it in another time, maybe the contacts share more surface area and things don't heat up. Maybe the female end got stepped on and it bears a grudge and became a less receptive receptacle.

Solid move upgrading the plug. You likely caught an issue before it became a problem. It could have become a situation. And if it had escalated to an incident...
