iOS12 - to upgrade or not?
Posted by: Ombligo

My SE is on 10.3. It is stable, so I hesitate to screw around with it, but I'm reading some good things about iOS12. Should I make the jump?

What about my wife's 5 (not 5s), also on 10.4

Reports are that it is much faster run over to places, but, if your device is mission-critical, I would wait until it is iOS 12.1.
It has been solid, but, why inject a dose of grief if things go wrong?

I upgraded my 10.3 iPhoneSE this morning to iOS 12.
I haven't used it long enough to see if it made a difference.

It wouldn't download the update via iTunes under Mac OS 10.9.5 though. I wasn't pleased about that. I had to download and update via the iPhone directly.

I was a bit motivated to try iOS 12 for bug fixes. My primary issue with my iPhone SE was that the Silent Mode side switch would activate/deactivate internally on its own with little correlation to the physical position of the external switch. I had the faint hope that this may be a software-fixable issue. The random switching back and forth was so frequent and unpredictable that I had to turn off the vibrate function else the phone would wake me up when it was sitting on my nightstand. Needless to say I can never count on my phone making an audible ring through its internal speaker (Bluetooth device is thus mandatory).

I updated my SE and iPad mini 2 with no issues.

I think the SE hardware is studly enough, I haven't noticed any speed increase.

My mini 2 is a different story. With 11.4.1, scrolling through a list of icons was tedious. It would only scroll the length of 1.5 or so screens, then stop dead. Try again, short scroll, stop dead. Updated to 12, and one flick put it through several screens, then coasts to a stop.

I'm very happy.

I know two others who have an iPhone SE. Neither have reported having this problem.
So, as far as I know, I alone am plagued with this issue.

iOS 12 solved one pesky issue for me.
I can now read the time easily on the lock screen of my iPhone when an audiobook is playing. In iOS 10 the time was featured in tiny print at the top of the screen instead of the normal large numbers in the center when an audiobook was playing in Books. I usually had to remove my iPhone from my case (AKA a ziplock sandwich bag) and shield the sunlight to read the time. I had taken to wearing a disposable plastic Casio when working outdoors since it was too much trouble to check the time on my iPhone.

Rule of thumb is to wait a couple of weeks (at least) for the bugs to shake out on an iOS update.

...But so far have heard good things from early adopters.

how do you do that? (save SH blobs). Also do people still bother to jailbreak phones? I know what that can do, but I never felt the need to do it.

I have a 5S still on 8.1.2 to keep an untethered jailbreak. The phone has been acting a bit wonky (thought it was the screen - it's not.) Finally bit the bullet and awaiting a Swappa iPhone 7, knowing I'll lose the jailbreak. And I will mourn.

I have saved blobs and just looked up how to use them. NOT festive. Very involved and can screw up easily if instructions are not followed to the letter.

All my phones have been jailbroken, but I finally decided to let it go. Early on, it was necessary. Now, there are ways to get some of the apps without the jailbreak. Hopefully, that will be a good enough workaround.

What about my wife's 5 (not 5s), also on 10.4

I think the 5 is topped out on 10. 5s is the minimum hardware (first 64bit) for 11.

from yesterday: [forums.macresource.com]

2 ipads, 1 ipad pro, 1 iphone 7, 1 iphone 6, 1 iphone se -- all good.

It spent months in beta, prob OK.

fwiw, your wife would love a new phone. Even if she says she doesnt. 5 is great and all, but even your SE kicks its butt.

I went for it on my iPad Pro 10", but clicked "hell no" on my iPhone 5s until I prove it out on my iPad.

Only did it two hours ago, so I haven't used it much.
One "feature" that's pissing me off is they swapped the number-lock and emoji's buttons on the virtual keyboard in Messages, and I keep hitting the emoji's button when I just want to shift to the numbers-and-symbols! Grrrr....

I have been using the Public Betas since they were released earlier in the summer. Absolutely no problems at all. Very stable and much better on older hardware. Have it running on iPhones (5s & 6s and SE) as well as iPads (Air & Pro 9.7) I would not hesitate at all to update.

You missed nothing.

iOS12 might be a true upgrade if you do not have any 32bit apps.

Well, that's good to know. Thanks. I'll have to check if I have any 32 bit apps, but it's doubtful. At the risk of sounding like an ignoramus, how would I know?

*edit* never mind, a google search just found that answer for me. I have 2; one for which I already have a replacement and one that I use regularly but for which I'm sure I could find a replacement.
