Help! Wife stuck in the airport in Switzerland, can't get internet or mail to work
Posted by: davester

My wife just texted me from the airport in Switzerland. She missed her connection to Italy and urgently needs to access the internet and mail. Her iPhone says:

"Safari cannot open page because the server isn't working"

and

"Mail server 'our email server' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct information in account settings"

I'm tempted to tell her to do a network settings reset but I don't want to screw things up bigtime.

Advice?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

if she is texting, on cell or wifi?
In any case, first I'd restart the phone.

She already restarted the phone. No dice. She has LTE available and is texting, calling OK. Just no internet or email. We paid for an AT&T 1GB international plan. I've never had problems with this before.

Shut WiFi off.

Thinking as I type;

I'd turn cellular off.
Turn Wifi Off.
Restart phone.
Turn Cellular back on.
Turn wifi back on.

Try accessing the internet with Cell off/WiFi on, then with Cell on/Wifi Off. Try to narrow the problem.

I'd also check with AT&T that that service isn't blocked in Switzerland (I'd be freakin' SHOCKED if that was the case... but I'd still check it).

If I think of anything else, I'll post more.

hmmm, I'd say call ATT tech supp, though obviously that could be a slow route. Or you try from here. Perhaps Ts internet server is down, though that would be odd.

She may need to have her (SIM) registration reset.

Usually if you have no data from Cel you only have the local network name in the upper left corner.
iPhones tend to prefer WiFi over Cel and you can be connected to airport WiFi with no ability to resolve a host.

A very weak Cel signal can also yield time-outs and of course safari only has that generic worthless no service message

Problem resolved. I contacted AT&T via chat. Seems like it was a time delay for their international data plan to kick in and recognize her phone after her arrival. That still doesn't make sense to me because I've never had that issue and it should have just kicked over to standard roaming.

When I was on AT&T, I was always served well by assuming any problem was AT&T's... More often that not, I was right. To be fair, I haven't been an AT&T customer in 5-6 years now.

They didn't set up the account right if they turned on the international plan. Happened to me twice. The second time the girl that parades big @#$%& and is easy on the eyes insisted that's how I wanted our phones set up. The manager just shook his head when he saw what she had done. Luckily T-mobil is an option here.
