The three of us (Me, Mrs. Anonymouse, and Daughter Anymouse) are going this June. We want someplace on the beach, nice, and affordable. We're not big resort types.

Any suggestions?

When you say "on the beach" do you mean on the beach? or is VERY near the beach ok as well? There are no private beaches on Hawaii. All beaches are accessible to the public. So by staying someplace VERY near the beach, you could save a ton of money.

Having just come back from Maui... stay in a resort. We stayed in Wailea at the Fairmont.

I can only give you my persepctive, maybe its different on other parts of the island. My sister in law lives there and moved up country because everything on the coast sucked.

Kihei -- pronouced KeyHell by locals -- has dozens of hotels/motels that Im sure offer cheap rates and what not, but driving down the blvd looks like a warzone. Kihei road was packed everyday. Strip malls galore. The hotels are right on the road. the beach was over run with locals.

We stopped in at Safeway, bought tons of food/snaks/drinks/beer and ate it rather than hotel food. Room was awesome. Pool was so-so. Walk right to the beach. Free towels, free chaise, free umbrella. Small beach. Quiet.

Id go back again.

Okay I will go contrary to everyone else and say there is a reasonable possibility to combine cheap with a great beach.

We like the Days Inn Maui, which is at the southern end of the aforementioned "strip" in Kihei. It is right on Keawakapu Beach...really, a few rooms are beach front. I won't lie, the rooms are TINY, but at our last stay they were clean and bed bug free.

Next door is the Mana Kai condominium complex. There is a nice little store that offers rolls and coffee for breakfast and sandwiches at lunch. The restaurant at the Mana Kai has some great deals for happy hour eats and drinks, so we can do "dinner" there at least a couple of times. We've literally stayed a week utilizing only these places. The Mana Kai restaurant also had great dinners but a bit pricey. There's another well noted but expensive restaurant to the other side of Days Inn.

We're also big fans of just picking up some poke and beer at the local market, or a place called Eskimo Candy and just bringing it back to the beach park. There's plenty of nice grass and its pretty easy to poach a lawn chair from the resort. The beach is about a mile long, so its easy to walk a bit and get away from any crowds.

When we want something more, staying at the Mana Kai itself it also nice. The "hotel" rooms are not good for the price. You want the condo option. You can also rent a condo plus the attached hotel room. Its quite a bit more pricey.

So yes...cheap place does not have to go hand in hand with bad beach. Don't even get me started on my hatred for AirBnB!

FWIW, we did our whole vaca thru costco. got a $500 gift card too.

Theres plenty of "normal" to eat out at. Outback, round table, decent mexican in Keyhell. There is a branch of "cheesbuger in paradise" in Waliea. Pricey, but good. They use meat from Calif, go figure. The little shopping center its in also has an ABC, plus a few other places to eat, a supermarket, and clothing. Pizza across the way was decent. And a live irish pub place up the road.

Room was awesome -- like a 1 bedroom suite. Wife and I could be in the bedroom whole kids were in other room. they slept on pull out. huge balcony if you wanted. huge bathroom.

I haven't been to Maui for a long time. We live on the garden isle of Kauai. My memories of Maui would steer me to Kaanapali for beaches. We stayed in a B&B in Hana a couple of times. That was very nice.

Nothing can beat [www.napilikai.com].

Not cheap, but you do get a discount for whole weeks.
