I think I made a mistake (Visited the humane society, found Dog)

Yesterday I donated a bunch of worn bedding and towels to our local Humane Society. Each potential adoptee gets a clean cage and fresh bedding every day, so they appreciate donations as stuff wears out. That was good. But...

I went to look at the dogs. And saw a poor little Chihuahua girl who is SO lonesome and sad.. she was brought in with another dog, and someone adopted the other dog and now both of them ! (Who DOES that ? ) So she has no pack, no alpha to tell her what to do. She mostly just naps and is sad. It broke my heart.

Mrs. cbelt3 and I are going to look at her tonight. We will bring our two Chis in to visit with her later to see if they get along. But odds are we are getting another fur baby.

The better news ? Winter is coming, so we would have three dogs in our bed for those three dog nights ! Joy to the World !

Going to an animal shelter can be one of the best mistakes you can ever make.

We have had "danny" a beagle mix, for just over 4 years now. One of the better decisions we made as a family.

That is exactly why I cannot volunteer at or even visit an animal shelter… I want to bring 'em all home with me, especially the "losers" with little chance of being adopted because they're not perfect cute little puppies anymore. Show me an old black dog with one eye, one ear, and three legs who's been at the shelter one day less than the maximum time and I wouldn't be able to stop myself adopting it even though I have absolutely no place for a dog right now.

My sister brought home a mutt from the pound where she was working some 30-odd years ago. The mutt was the sweetest and gentlest, yet most neurotic and destructive dog I have ever come across.

She destroyed all the furniture and potted trees. We finally decided to keep her in the furnished basement. She chewed through the door like a rodent.

She responded to scoldings or "bad dog!" by either vomiting or having a grand-mal seizure.

She'd hallucinate (we think) - looking straight at the center of an empty room, then yipping and jumping backwards as though being attacked, then would circle the center of the living room before yelping and running away.

After a year, we finally gave her to a farm (not a euphemism); they gave her back six months later because she'd chase the sheep until they collapsed, and she destroyed the extension they were building onto the farmhouse.

That blasted dog never showed signs of aging or slowing down, and lived with us for 12 agonizing years before at last succumbing to liver cancer. The darndest thing is I still miss her.

Our local shelter is filled to overflowing with nothing but Pit Bulls. The demographics of our community favor this type of dog and they're often found abandoned wandering around trying to stay alive. It's really sad. I know that Pit Bulls are not inherently bad or dangerous, but when one does go bad or become dangerous, the stakes go up significantly. I can't welcome that into my home. I'm still holding out for a lab mix.

Yeah! Look forward to pics.

I love dogs. Spend quite a few nights a week with dogs in a nice Dog Park near my house here in Anaheim with my Shiba Inu, Sven. Very relaxing time with Sven, and with the other dogs and their owners. We have quite a good group of people there.

I used to shoot the papers "Adopt-a-Pet every week, it was hard not to take some of them home.

The most gut wrenching thing I ever had to do was as a favor to the county shelter.. they were trying to get people to understand that most of these animals do not have happy endings. They had me shoot a photo of some very recognizable (fur markings, etc) pups playing a cuddling, then shoot the same animals in a wheelbarrow after being euthanized. I thought I was prepared, but I wasn't. The veterinary techs that have to do that job generally only lasted a few months before having to be rotated out.

Update:
The dog is in foster care right now. We will go talk to them this afternoon and see if we can visit with her. Otherwise she will be at an adoption event Saturday.
