Cools by Evaporation! Searching for photo canvas bag hung on car

Does anybody else remember canvas bags hung on the front (outside) of a car’s radiator? Was this only used on cars in the US west?

Searching for a photo on the Internet. Can only find images of the bags, but none of them actually being used.

Anyone with better search skills than I able to find a bag actually hanging off the front of the car?

Thanks, Todd’s parched (and hot) keyboard

Found by searching 'car with radiator bag'. Yeah, I had a best buddy when living in socal that had family in Palm Springs - they had one of those bags on their little Volvo wagon in the mid 60s.

Nice searching. Thanks.

My memory is ours went on an Oldsmobile in the early sixties when we drove from Los Angeles to Palm Springs.

Were these not popular in other parts of the country.

I believe The evaporation takes heat away from the bag, literally cooling the bag down. Same reason a canteen in a wet bag will be cooler than a dry bag.

I read about them in American History. A quick Google reveals:

And from StackExchange

Here is what I found out about them: it seeps water through the bag and evaporates, causing the water to cool inside. Here is where I need some help:

Why does the water seep through the bag? Is it because the water molecules have a Maxwell speed distribution and only the fastest molecules seep out?
What mechanism is occurring for heat being removed from the water to evaporate the water on the bag’s surface? Doesn't radiation also contribute here?
Why does moving increases the cooling effect faster?

Don't have a photo, but I have one of those bags stashed away with my camping gear. Mine's called a "Desert Bag". I'm a geologist and spent many years working in the western deserts. It was always nice after a day of field work in the heat to come back to the car and have a swig of cool water from the desert bag.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

This is probably the most well know picture of one.

We had one that my dad would hang from the front bumper. It kept the water really cool in hot, dry climates. We also had an evaporator cooler, sort of a swamp cooler for the car, that hung from the side window, scooping air from its front and exhausting it into the car. We rented them for long summer trips in our '56 Mercury station wagon. They worked really well, except we had to stop the car for a drink.

My late brother had a collection of the desert bags, one of them the Jackson Browne one.

Familiar with both. Both worked surprisingly well. Desert, of course.
